There are actually Croatian (not Croation, btw) clubs in Phoenix:

Croatians | Croatian People | Croatian Cultural Club : The Croatian : American Club of Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix Croatians - Welcome (http://phoenixcroatians.com/xoops/html/aboutus.php - broken link)

Here in LA (San Pedro more specifically) there is quite a Croatian presence and here is the Cultural Center's link for the OP for more info (I took my Croatian language classes here, and they have many other offerings like movie nights, dances, etc.)

Croatian Cultural Center of Greater Los Angeles - San Pedro, Calfornia (http://www.croatianculture.org/aboutus.html - broken link)

(I think finding out how many Croats immigrated to the US in the last five years is not data that is readily available yet in various census data I have searched for).

Croatian official statistics I found:

Year / Immigrants to Croatia / Emigrants from Croatia

2001 / 24 415 / 7488
2002 / 20 365 /11 767
2003 / 18 455 / 6534
2004 / 18 383 / 6812
2005 / 14 230 / 6012

Hmmm, obviously we will not take over USA any time soon... As you can see much more people immigrate to Croatia than emigrate from it. Only smaller number out of emigrants relocate to USA. Most of them actually emigrate to neighboring countries (Serbia, Bosnia) and the European Union.

Btw Croats were represented in the last Superbowl in both teams: Bill Belichick and David Diehl.

We speak Croatian, ArizonaBear.
The WRITTEN version must be remarkably similar to California English...I was able to undertand almost your entire post. The only discrepancy I could detect is that your spelling and punctuation was superior to our local version. However, I doubt I'd be as successful with the SPOKEN version....

Yeah, Iím afraid youíre right about the spoken version remark. In my defense, I hardly ever have the opportunity to actually speak it.

Some years ago a couple Croatian men were arrested by INS after they saw them wandering around during a hot summer day in a border town wearing heavy clothing and jackets. Kind of stuck out in the crowd. Plus they were speaking Croatian, lol. Turns out they entered the US from the Mexican border.

Amateurs... They should have spoken Spanish to get unnoticed...

What happen to them, I mean what happens to such people? They were sent back to Mexico? Thatís what they usually do in Europe; illegal immigrants are being sent to the country from which they entered (and not to their native country).
