I believe that the quotes around "immigration" by malamute where meant to indicate that he was talking about illegal aliens and not legal immigrants. I think the rest of his post proves that out also. Now can we get back to talking about illegal immigration in the illegal immigration forum? There is another forum if one wants to talk about legal immigration and this isn't the one.

I'm pretty sure the Spanish speaking fireman will also be able to speak English fluently and I have no problems with that.

The fact is alot of people in America today and not just Illigal Immigrants can only speak Spanish fluently and Spanish speaking Fireman and Police officers are needed. I don't think children deserve to be burned alive or brutally murdered just because they can't speak 2 languages. How many languages do you grown people on your high horse speak?

Because I lived in countries where those languages were spoken... and instead of being catered to, I LEARNED THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN THE COUNTRY.

The problem is that native English speaking Americans who are firemen and police officers or who are applying for those jobs are now being required to learn Spanish. This isn't a Spanish speaking country. Our language is English and most Hispanic Americans know how to speak English.

Spanish isn't the only minority language spoken in this country. Why aren't these public servants being required to learn Mandarin, German, Italian, etc? It is because there so many millions of illegal Spanish speakers in this country and now that it is affecting English speaking Americans ability to retain and find a job.

How many languages do these illegal aliens speak? Just one! No problem with that though, right?

The "elderly" using Medicaid and HUD as illegal immigrants? If a legal immigrant doesn't qualify for a benefit, how is an illegal alien using it? Use of those benefits when unqualified is illegal, whether the immigrant is or not.

Another post had an allegation about the Earned Income Tax Credit being misused. Ultimately it was attributed to be a legal immigrant. You can't have it both ways, some topics and the aspect of what a particular immigrant does can be very pertinent here.

Use of correct terms, and clarity in comments is important as well...

"Malamute" referenced "immigrants" coming here, that they are not becoming "a part of the American people"...

He uses different references for illegal aliens, and would certainly not expect them to become "a part of the American people"...

Bad interpretation on your part...

Chide your friends, not me...

I have not started any topics (yet), and I am responding to other comments, not hijacking the thread...

EXACTLY! Even though I knew I'd only be in Germany/Portugal for a few years. I still took time to learn the language and common terms out of respect for the locals.

Why would they suddenly have "We're Hiring" Signs in Spanish?
It's a new method they have with more than 1 meaning. It's their way to hire on, low wage, "graveyard shift, stockboys".

I read that article on the Globe this morning.

So what is the purpose of hiring "Spanish" speaking firefighters in a country where English is the language spoken?

Why can't people just learn English? Why do we cater to them so much?

Boston has a huge Asian population as well but the city is not hiring candidates who speak Cantonese / Mandarin, are they...? What about Russian? Italian?

Why Spanish?
De Jure language in America: None.

That's why.

The defacto langauge of the U.S. is English. If public servants and workers are going to be required to learn a foreign language to obtain or retain employment then they should have to learn all of the foreign langauges spoken in this country and not just Spanish.

Most definitely the Americans I have seen fail at spoken and written English are not "Anchor Babies"...
I know what's easy to understand. Why is the only language being printed as a second language Spanish? Why isn't it any other language? Because these businesses are trying to benefit from the huge illegal alien population we've let accumulate.

No one cares about an elderly Japanese resident here who doesn't speak English. It's all about tapping the illegal alien market.
