I think he is or will be just another flip-flopping politician on illegal immigration hoping to catch the most votes. This time around we are going to be very careful whom we elect as our president.

You are right. In his new book, his views on immigration are totally different than what he displayed in the past.

Generally speaking, strict Libertarians are for open borders. Ron Paul has no open borders in mind. You can watch his Stossel interview on youtube that he had last week

Ron Paul actually believes immigration should be handled and dealt with on a STATE level. On the flip side, he believes one of the very few things the federal govt should handle is national protection. Immigration today could be considered a threat to national security in which the federal govt would have responsibility, but state laws and local police enforcement should enforce the laws.

The thing about this is that if the US becomes a Free Market which Libertarians are working toward, then there won't be nearly as many immigrants trying to get in, they won't have illegal motivations to enter (i.e. drug trade, prostitution) because those won't be illegal in a Free Market with minimal govt. Also, by losing the status of a Welfare Nation the US will no longer be a haven for immigrants to come get govt benefits like welfare, healthcare, schooling, etc, because those things will all cost money. They wouldn't be supplied by the govt and given for free or to select groups. Healthcare and schools would be privatized. Illegal immigrants with no money will have no reason to cross the border.

In the bigger picture, Immigration won't be as big of a problem.
