The European Union opened the door to allowing countries to reintroduce national border controls in order to police illegal immigration, in response to growing fears about whether it can handle an influx of North African migrants.

Border checks do not help when you can just walk (or ski) across the border. Furthermore, the amount of legitimate cross border traffic is so huge that it is not really practicable to restrict it by enhanced checks.

Meaningful border checks help. Try going into Canada and remaining there illegally using their government welfare programs. As socialist as they might be, they won't take in the welfare recipients like our borders allow.

The border into the USA is a big joke. Visitor or shopping visas are handed out like candy, very easily obtained and if the so-called visitor wishes to stay and work, enroll their kids in free-lunch schools here, or give birth here - no problem, they are allowed to do so. It's all up to the visitor, there is no real expectation that they honor the terms of their visas.

Those who don't feel like getting the visitor visas can simply buy or rent a laser border crossing card on the streets of any border town. More often they just rent them, the organized criminal rings which are associated with the cartels, simply collect these laser visas after the illegal crosses over so they can rent them out over and over.

And while the checks are made on the bridges, the official ports of entry, the illegals easily cross over through openings in the fence right below the bridges or they are allowed to simply go around the fence. Or come in through tunnels under them.

Once over the border, there will be nothing done about the illegals. Sometimes if they are caught actually in the act of crossing over illegally, they are apprehended but once they are 2 feet from the border, they can do whatever they please, go where they wish. There are some border checkpoints about 80 miles from the actual border but it's easy enough to go around them.
