Baba was an orphan in Niger who had been kept as a slave all his life. He was often beaten by his master. He finally escaped from his village on a donkey and made his way to the Ivory Coast, and from there to the UK.

Do the ranters and ravers here have any sympathy for this man?

Sympathy? Yes. Believe he should be allowed to stay? No.

Slavery is evil, and it’s sad he had to endure such an atrocity. However, how does his ordeal relate to our illegal immigration problem? What’s your point?

Exactly. He didn't have to flee the Country to avoid his situation. I believe it's another case of heading to the "land of the free-bies". We must advertise that pretty well.

What a terribly written news story. Why did he choose to come to the UK?

Because he couldn't afford the smugglers rate to go to America.

There's an awful lot of countries (and some rather imposing bodies of water) to traverse between Niger and the UK..... presumably, once he removes himself from his bad situation in Niger, he could set up shop in any of the dozen or more countries he passed through en route to NW Europe... but chose the UK for some reason. Why?

But, this topic might not be irrelevant in the "illegal immigration" forum.... especially if he qualifies for refugee status or asylum. Then again, the point remains, why the UK? Social benefits?
