This is an important bill to support as birth-right citizenship is a major incentive for illegals---and a huge financial burden for us taxpayers. Write your senators and congressmen with your support for this bill. The list is growing with congressional supporters--Ron Paul is a supporter.

This would be part of the ultimate solution to reduce the magnet of illegal immigration.

this legislation is like...when you see a child trying to put a square peg in a round hole...you want to reach over and help, but its best they learn on their own.

That bill won't go anywhere. If you want to do this right, you have to repeal the 14th amendment, and that's no simple task. All but impossible.

And for what? What is so offensive about birthright citizenship? Historically speaking, it's pretty foundational to democracy.

And if the criterion is not birth, then what should it be instead? That is a troubling question to which you need an answer.

Birthright aint that good. Xcept for the USA and Canada, NO rich country has it anymore cause Ireland, etc. were being flooded by the kids of illegal aliens.

Don't bet on it. There is much interest in congress in changing the requirements for birthright citizenship. You find nothing offensive about an illegal alien giving birth in our country and the newborn gets instant citizenship? It has nothing to do with democracy. Most first world countries require that at least one parent be a citizen in order for a newborn to qualify. What is troubling is that we put so little value on our citizenship that any foreign lawbreaker can pop out a kid on our soil and "voila" they are a citizen and entitled to tap into our tax coffers for 18 years.

What SHOULD happen is provisions that prevent any old illegal from hopping the border and popping out a kid. Use common sense and only give citizenship to children of a LEGAL immigrant or U.S citizen, simple as that. If a lady walks in a hospital and demands they care for her and help her give birth we the taxpayers should DEMAND documentation that she or the childs father is in this country LEGALLY. If not, no U.S birth certificate. Anyone that says otherwise supports lawbreakers and is Un-American IMO. But how would something like this ever pass when people that blatantly are illegal are protesting in our streets demanding free stuff from AMERICANS are supported by Obama and his henchmen?

I don't think many republicans would support this bill either. Everyone knows something needs to be done, but no one is willing to take politically risky career ending moves to do something about it.

Something needs to be done

There is nothing offensive about birthright citizenship, under certain conditions. If someone is born to natural born American parents, they, of course, hold birthright citizenship. If someone is born to parents who are LEGAL immigrants here, then they, too, are entitled to birthright citizenship. However, if a woman has deliberately entered this country ILLEGALLY for the sole purpose of giving birth to her child on American soil, THAT is offensive, sneaky and deceitful. This mother has not established citizenship LEGALLY in this country, and therefore, her child should not be granted citizenship.
