As long as this is about Hispanics in general assimilating, and not illegal immigration...

I've said it before, four examples of direct immigrants from Mexico are here...

And I'm amazed at the quick transformation...

Even more interesting was the Mexican - American "futbol" game passed without a single comment here...

They're "Americanizing" too well...

Apparently not? I seriously don't understand this love-affair with assimilation. Bizarre indeed.

When I think of assimilation, I always picture Apu from the Simpsons when he tried to be American by putting on a cowboy hat and saying that the Ny Mets were his favorite baseball squadron and that he would no longer have to worry about his Indian heritage when he could just read tabloids about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman...funny stuff.

I like laws that make sense and are just. Bad laws should be repealed or fixed. I don't just blindly assume because something is the law it's right.

More than half, 55% according to the Pew Center. While the survey is a bit dated, hardly think that attitudes have changed in five years.

Yes.

I said I'd still call myself American even if I moved to Mexico.
You said that means I wouldn't be assimilating and asked why I'd move there if not to embrace their culture.

You are setting up a false dichotomoy where I can either call myself American in Mexico, or I can embrace their culture.

I love the "did I say that?" game.

No, you didn't say those exact words but that was the logical implication of what you did write.

I mean, if that's the wrong conclusion to draw from your post, tell us what we SHOULD be reading that to mean. Quit beating around the bush.

Part of becoming assimilated is to respect our laws including our immigration laws. Part of becoming assimilated is putting the needs and welfare of the American people above the "needs" of those foreigners here illegally from one's own ethnic group. I don't see that happening with far too many citizens of the Hispanic persuasion.

You can call yourself what you want.
It doesn't mean you are still American. ON Paper you are Mexican if you are in that country legally.
