The "spirit" of a law is a commonly used legal term, nothing particularly progressive about it.

Well first, he was not brought here by illegal immigrant parents..he was sent here by his Mother (who remained behind in the Phillipines) thru a Coyote to live with his Grandparents. He was 12...His Grandparents, who were citizens, obtained false documents so he could attend school. He found out when he was 15 that he was illegal when he tried to get a learners permit to drive. In the ensueing years he recruited other citizens help him obtain the necessary documentation to get his drivers license in Washington State. He had several "conspirators" in his school, work and private life that kept his secret for him. I am sure that a) if he had not decided to come forward he could have gone for several more years in his situation and b) he is the tip of the iceberg as far as well concealed illegals are concerned.
The point is that he is here illegally...he fraudulently obtained the necessary documents to obtainhis schooling, work and housing. It doesn't matter what he accomplished...if Albert Einstein had been found to have fraudulent credentials it would have mattered very little how smart he was or what he accomplished..he would have been discredited, everything he did would have been questioned and re-proven or verified by someone with the proper "papers".
