Do you believe that this man should be deported to Mexico for further treatment, or should be allowed to stay in the U.S. since the U.S. didn't prevent him from entering the country in the first place?
Actually I think his employer should pay his bills. Or Mexico. I don't think his bills are MY responsibility as a taxpayer.
Buy him a fancy wheelchair, stick his arse in it, lock the controls in drive, and then point it in the direction of the border!
There are two things that need to be done here.
Deport him no questions asked or hesitations in the process. If his "common law" wife is also illegal send her back as well!
Fine the company that hired him 10 times the amount his medical care has cost. With that money first pay the hospital. Next pay the government for any costs associated with his deportation. Then with whatever money is left take 75% and put it into a fund to help truly needed legal aliens and citizens during this economic crisis. Take the other 25% and give it to the illegal for future expenses.
Action 1 above sends a message to illegals to get out and don't come back illegally! Action 2 sends a message to employers they will pay dearly for hiring illegal immigrants!
I wonder what happens to Americans who become ill or have an accident while in another country and who didn't purchase travel insurance or make sure their health insurance they have in the U.S. would cover them while out of the country? It's extremely expensive to be repatriated back to the U.S. from another country by air ambulance, for example.
But, I wonder if France, for example, would offer as much expensive treatment to a foreigner such as American in one of their hospitals as the illegal alien from Mexico received in the Galveston hospital? Do other countries demand payment up front before treatment?
I've never traveled outside the country without purchasing the travel insurance that will pay for my medical care if needed overseas OR pay for my travel to be sent back to the U.S. It's worth every penny.

When I lived in Australia and traveled to the US to visit, I *always* purchased travel insurance, because we were warned about the cost of health care in the US.
Thankfully, I have a health insurance policy that covers me (including repatriation) when I am travel internationally.
I'm sure for illegal immigrants, however, travel insurance is low on their list of priorities.
It's strange the hate that is stirred up when you even mention the words illegal immigration.
In this thread I have not stated my opinion one way or the other on what should be done...I only expressed sympathy for a man that was in pain and how he probably won't get the treatment he needs.
In response to my simple "oh how sad for that guy" I have gotten numerous DMs calling me a bleeding heart liberal (which I am, but still), a socialist (which I am, but still), admonishments, sarcastic statements "why don't you pay for my hospital bill since you love Mexicans so much", so on so on etc etc....
It's a shame people can't answer a philosophical question without getting jumped on. Makes me wonder what kind of world we live in when you are the "enemy" for feeling sympathy for brown people.

Well, some may hate illegal immigrants......I don't, but.....
I just resent the fact that many of them bleed our system for all it's worth, and Mexico encourages them to come here so Mexico won't have to deal with them.
Our emergency rooms and hospitals are stuck with having to treat illegals, and we citizens end up footing the bill.
Our prisons have a large illegal population, so we're stuck with that bill, too. Illegals' cost to us citizen taxpayers as a whole is greater than the supposed benefits they bring in the form of "cheap" labor.
Like this case, turns out that they aren't such "cheap" labor after all. The medical center is still stuck with the costs of his treatment. As the article also stated, this happens over and over and over again.
From my reading of the above, all workers must be covered by Workmen's Compensation for on-the-job injuries--- except in Texas. If a Texas employer opts out, though, the employer bears the full responsibility for the claim. EVERY workers is covered and eligible for benefits.
If all you want to do is scream about the guy being illegal, there is a subforum for that:
Honestly, if anyone needs to be penalized in this situation, it needs to be the employers of illegal immigrants.
Its important to remember, they dont come here for no reason. They come because (to be perfectly honest) Mexico is falling apart at the seams outside the major cities, the areas of Mexico that most of the illegal immigrants come from is very violent, it is costly and takes a long time to get a legit visa or permit, and there are many, many companies (especially in Texas and California) that are more than willing to hire them.
Right or wrong, the only way to stop it is by penalizing the employers of illegals. A fence wont stop it because most are desperate enough to find a way around it. Laws wont stop it for the same reason.
Since Texas will never penalize any business for hiring illegals (ever), this is your fate. Enjoy!
Whomever hired him should be held fully liable for all of his expenses in relation to this injury. Since that employer didn't follow OSHA regulations at all, OSHA should fine that employer. So even if the worker is sent back to his home country, the employer should be held liable for the injury and for pocket money. What would happen if the employer did not carry Workmans Compansation Insurance and a legal employee was injured? The hospital should send the bills to collections and hit up the employer for it all.
The illegals are here because our gov't makes it easy to hire them with minimal problems. We have visa programs in place. But the fines related to this issue are extremely less than hiring legals. Once the fines exceed the cost of hiring legals, thats the only real way to stop it. Get them in the pocket. Increasing border patrols just spends more money on an issue that could be resolved by a President, Congress & Senate have the courage to do and not let big business control their actions.
