If nothing else, just leave the illegals illegal. Don't give them any thing -- they certainly don't need it, they didn't care about the laws when they showed up here illegally, when they paid their cartel smuggler to get them some stolen documents and bring them in.

Leaving them illegal keeps them working the jobs we don't want (or so the illegals claim), it makes them easier to deport when they get into mischief.

It's not as though the illegals are going to get mad if they aren't given their legal status and pack up and leave. They won't do anything. They'll just keep on living here illegally, loving the American dollar more than they love their own country but they won't stampede out of here to punish us if we don't make them legal.

I see no particular reason for citizenship. One might make it possible but quite difficult...ie a command of english and a large payment or a long time period.

Illegal status however creates its own set of problems. You create effectively a second class of person. Given that we eventually get good at eVerify we force them off the books. We effectively grow that branch of the economy which is off the books and does not pay proper taxes or enforce safety and wage rules.

It also maintains the infrastructure to support new illegals and almost incentivizes their importation. The result is not really terrible as their is only a limited demographic left in Mexico to come in...but it certainly guarantees that another 5 or 6 million will make the journey.

Maybe something like a ten year period after the illegal registers where he is allowed to work but denied all other benefits. Subject during that period to immediate deportation for any significant breach of the law. Upon finishing the ten years he gets a regular green card. Might even require that he pay back any welfare received for legal children. American born children have a right to welfare and such. But nothing keeps us from requiring that a parent pay it all back before becoming permanent.

Well the very last thing we need are immigrants who cannot pay their own way. If they can't pay their hospital bills, require food stamps and other welfare too feed their families, they should be the first ones given the boot.

I don't think it really matters all that much to the illegals if they're illegal or not. The only thing is they keep their noses cleaner if they're illegal knowing they can be deported.

I don't believe in having a second class kind of people but that's where enforcement of the laws comes in and controlling the borders. I'm all for really coming down hard on all those who employ illegals.

Leaving them illegal makes it more feasible for them to self-deport. Many illegals at one time actually intended to return home, they first missed their family and friends, their way of life. Often they set out excited but also sad over leaving their home, their country.

The best thing is to get them to go home on their own accord, self-deport, return home like they originally planned to do. In the meantime, if they're working illegally but not showing up to collect food stamps, not deadbeats on hospital bills, they aren't the biggest problem.

They should be made to realize that having babies here will not get them a pass around the laws, it will not make them non-deportable and it should not get them government handouts in behalf of their baby. Sure the kid might be a US citizen and could start applying for food stamps when he turns 18, but until then should not.
