News, Dirt-cheap day labor.
The paint is peeling off your front door. There are leaves to rake in the yard. And you desperately need a strong back to help move some furniture.
These jobs are typically too small to attract the attention of a contractor -- but not so small that an entire industry hasn't sprung up to accommodate them. In most cities of any size, there's a ready pool of cheap labor available on short notice, congregating in parking lots near the local Home Depot or a similar store, or at high-traffic intersections.

These are just the types of jobs neighborhood kids or college students used to do for extra cash.

IMO, this is insane. Under no circumstances would I pick someone up off a street corner and allow them in my home or even on my property. To the best of my knowledge, most legitimate businesses screen their employees so you will not potentially end up letting an axe murderer into your home to install your new garbage disposer. Do these people ever stop to consider asking a local high school or college student if they would be willing to paint a door or move furniture? If money is tight, can you work out a swap with a neighbor- I'll babysit your kids Saturday if your husband can put up 6 storm windows for me? In my area, a number of handyman services have sprung up who will send someone to do just this type of job for a fee.
If people are hiring illegals because they don't want to pay a decent wage for work done, all I can say is shame on them.

But you can bet there aren't any neighborhood kids or college students standing out there asking for a chance! I know I'd hire them over most others just so I could have someone who speaks English! So, in the end, people take what they can get.

Considering how many of the illegal immigrants are criminals I would never allow one around my home. Someone had recently put up a link to those wanted in LA and it looked like 99% of them were illegals.
We have had no problem finding help. We are restoring a historical building and because Home Depot accommodates illegal immigrants we will not give them one cent of our business. I am willing to pay a little more to a business that can recognize fellow Americans.

Always some excuse to make these illegal criminals look like we need them here. We don't need them, nor want them -

Why would American citizens stand out on a corner like an illegal alien?
If you are serious about hiring Americans then hire one. Every city I've ever lived in has had neighborhood kids and college kids advertising for work. You see their ads in the Penny Saver, on bulletin boards at local supermarkets, the local newspapers, and even in the yellow pages.

When my daughter's friends tried to find jobs (these were guys) in landscaping, they couldn't get a job in it. They said Mexicans had the market wrapped up.
Same with fast food, construction, meatpacking, hotel and motels, food preparation, you name it.
The god of cheapness is worshipped mightily by the rich.

You can bet the employees get paid cash too.
