An Education, Over the Border and Under the Radar - Slide Show - NYTimes.com

Gee, a kid from a neighboring town was caught and they can't catch someone from another country?

Sad isn't it. School districts are strict when it comes to going to school in another neighborhood and you're gone the minute they find out. Yet they cannot ask your legal status.

You think we didn't give them amnesty ?

Does not appear to be an illegal immigration issue. These children are American Citizens.

They may as well actually be legal residents of the school district. You are not required to sleep in your legal residence.

In my state you are required to be a local resident because local taxes pay for the schools.

When I was a kid, way back when, it was $5000 per year per child. I think we are paying over double that now.

Municipalities are very fastidious in monitoring these kids because parents in neighboring towns who send their kids illegally to the schools of other towns are considered to be thieves. They are, when caught, sent bills for their child's attendance and prosecuted in court if they refuse to pay.

You would think that California, with all of its financial problems, would be a bit more fastidious in this matter, wouldn't you?

Yes it is. Or at least, was.

These Illegals came here at some time in the past and abused the 14th giving their kids American status by default. They used our ER rooms and classrooms (besides other social services) because of their kids loophole status. When the Parents were either deported or left because of the recession they took their kids with them. They live outside of the district so they are committing fraud.

This is another, "which came first the chicken or the egg". The kid wouldn't be able to attend US schools if the Parents hadn't broken US laws.

In my town, illegals cross the bridge from mexico on a daily basis to go to school in Texas schools. They are not US citizens, nor are they legal residents. It has been going on for years. Our school taxes are outrageous because of them and they can not be refused. It's obscene. They should be going to school in mexico.. They do have schools there. Instead, they take the services that should be reserved for our children for their benefit.

Are they coming over by a visa? We had that problem here but since they quit busing in from the border I thought they ended it. It may still be a problem at schools within walking distance at the border.

It is so sad, what is becoming of this country.

I look at some other forums of Western countries and their citizens are mad as heck over people who come to their countries LEGALLY.

We are probably the most tolerant people of the world, what we put up with from our government.

Mexico has some of the laws with the lowest tolerance of foreigners in the world, and look what they do to us. And we take it?

We really deserve better than this.

We have many schools within walking distance and they fill them to capacity.. Also relatives on this side of the border transport them once they are across to more inland schools... It's still a problem here.
