“We have families who really are desperate,” said Elena Morales of El Centro, an anti-poverty agency in Kansas City, Kan. “These food stamps were making a difference for families to be able to provide nutritional food for their children, or food at all. … This policy not only hurts these families, it hurts us, too, especially because we’re talking about U.S. citizen children.”

By law, illegal immigrants are not eligible for food stamps. However, U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants can be.

Children like the 5-year-old son of Isela, a woman who lives in Wyandotte County.

She received a letter saying she would no longer get food stamps for her son. Initially she wondered why.

“Then I came up with my own answer,” Isela said. “It’s because of my lack of status. My lack of papers.”

When she received the notice, she was making $9 an hour and working an average of 38 hours a week with no benefits. Before the policy change, her son qualified for $121 a month in food stamps. That allowed her to buy the fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meat her son’s doctor said he needs.

Dear Illegal Aliens:

Welcome to the reality of American citizens, many whom are taxpayers who need help but don't qualify. Stop having the anchors to utilize as a source of income when you know you can't afford to feed them on your own.

Proof the illegals are not coming to work hard and improve themselves but instead to mooch off US government handouts.

Illegals will claim they cannot feed their many children - back home or here without the US taxapayers feeding them but remittances to Mexico alone exceed $2 billion a month. Maybe it's time to tax some of that remittance money and repay the American taxpayer.

Every single illegal that tries to apply for food stamps and Medicaid should find themselves deported.

Even if we somehow do need hard low paid workers, we definitely don't need the parasites who come for the welfare handouts. These women don't come to work, they come to give birth and lay around the rest of their lives.

Most of the kids have dual citizenship. Why don't they demand food assistance from their parent's home countries? You know. The country where both parties aren't breaking any laws and have the legal right to reside.

They have not banned food stamps to US born children. What they did was change the eligibility criteria. Any family with no reported income would still receive the food stamps...they simply cut off some of the ones that are working.

Note that those who will still qualify include those with large number of US born children and those with very low reported incomes. So the welfare queens are not impacted.

This may well make sense to some of you but I fail to see the elegance of this. cheap shot.

This should be the policy nationwide. If the parents are here illegally, they should automatically disqualify. After all, it's the illegal parents who receive the benefits "on behalf of" their U.S.-born children. Perhaps if they are forced to actually support their children, they'll think twice before giving birth to children they know they cannot support. Anchor babies are bankrupting states. Ending this outrageous gravy train is long overdue.

In that case, they will all continue to fleece taxpayers by simply relying on fraud and deception, which is as easy for them as breathing.

Oh -- well that's easy then -- many illegals have plenty of income that's cash under the table they won't report and many illegals have a variety of identification documents and the marriage rate of illegals is very low so that the single mother shacking up with her latest novio can benefit from his income but still qualify as a single non-employed mother.
