More like 2 kids in 2012.

Materialism. Fewer children mean we can buy more junk we don't need.

Actual the average birthrate in Mexico right now is just over two children total:

Mexico's population: When the niños run out | The Economist

At least the article talks about the birthrate compared to immigration (which would be the only legitimate reason to bring it up on the forum), but the last paragraph is interesting:

History teaches caution in assessing the link between demography and migration. The Mexican baby boom of the 1950s coincided with lowish emigration, whereas the exodus to the United States kicked off in the 1980s, just as Mexico’s birth rate was plummeting. Today’s falling fertility rate will curb the flow...

No, what it means is that most Americans are reproducing at replacement levels and only having kids they can afford to feed. We don't need to be reproducing at third world rates that depend on government assistance to feed their broods. We'd be a lot better off having a smaller population to fit a smaller economy. That will ensure that there are enough jobs and resources for everyone.

You tell me then why in "this" country Mexicans aka Hispanics are the fastest growing group? Wouldn't have anything to do with illegal immigration and/or our generous welfare entitlement programs, would it?

Illegal immigration doesn't have as much of a direct impact year-to-year anymore (over 90% came before 2005). Even legal immigration from Mexico is decreasing now. All Hispanics are half the U.S. growth rate, and that is almost evenly split between births and immigration (primarily legal).

But that birthrate is now trending down year after year: Poor economy slows Hispanic baby boom

That article also identifies that non-Hispanic Whites are still the most births in the United States...

I don't know what impact "our generous welfare entitlement programs" have on any U.S. population growth, much less than that of Hispanics in particular...

Whether it is trending down or not the fact still remains that Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in this country. It is directly due to illegal immigration and anchor babies. Illegal aliens know that they can give birth on our soil and get welfare for their kids. Yes, many Americans do it also but why add illegal aliens giving birth on our soil to the mix? Hispanics just happen to be the largest ethnic group (and particular, Mexicans) in this country illegally. Those are just the facts.

For a total Hispanic population over 50 million, less than 1 million babies are going to be spread near equally over citizens, legal, and illegal immigrants. Legal immigration is higher than illegal immigration. Mathematically illegal aliens and their offspring are not the majority of Hispanic growth.
