Two years ago, Zapeta was ready to return to Guatemala, so he carried a duffel bag filled with $59,000 -- all the cash he had scrimped and saved over the years -- to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

But when Zapeta tried to go through airport security, an officer spotted the money in the bag and called U.S. customs officials.

"They asked me how much money I had," Zapeta recalled, speaking to CNN in Spanish.

He told the customs officials $59,000. At that point, U.S. customs seized his money, setting off a two-year struggle for Zapeta to get it back.

Zapeta, who speaks no English, said he didn't know he was running afoul of U.S. law by failing to declare he was carrying more than $10,000 with him. Anyone entering or leaving the country with more than $10,000 has to fill out a one-page form declaring the money to U.S. customs.

Mistake costs dishwasher $59,000 - CNN.com
Common sense.

Make him pay back taxes (penalties and interest included), repay social services and he can keep the $29.95 change.

His problem for not knowing about the limit. I knew about it, and when I came back to this country carrying a cashier's check for 10,000 GBP (about $20,000) I declared it to customs. All I had to do was fill in a form at customs and that was it. Easy as pie.

This guy is an idiot.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse and that is what they tell us citizens.

Precisely! What kind of idiot thinks you can haul $59,000 in cash through customs WITHOUT declaring it? He deserves to lose every penny of his ill-gotten money. He should be deported and banned. We need to put his $59,000 into the FENCE FUND. We need a fence like what they have around supermax prisons with that no-man's land of barbed wire. That'll stop 'em.

The way I look at it is that he stole it from our country in the first place because he took a job from an American.

What also gets me is that he is living in the USA for 11 years and STILL speaks no English!!! He deserves to be caught, money taken, and deported.

That is one of the big problems with these illegal Hispanics. No regard for the laws of our country. Just watch them try to drive.

That's a pretty nice chunk of change, IMO for a dishwasher. I mean, what do these folks make?
He managed to save $59,000? Wow, maybe he can be my financial adviser!
