There is no issue that has divided our nation to the degree that immigration has. Historically churches have provided sanctuary. There has long been a debate concerning America's legal or illegal gaining of Mexican lands. The Chinese Exclusion Act provies a worst case scenario for our racism. Racism has long been associated with immigration. The blacks came as slaves. Benjamin Franklin was opposed to the arrival of Germans and the Irish were considered to be an inferior race long before John F. Kennedy became president.

One thing wrong is that Obama cares so much for these foreign children living here illegally and he's not doing anything to bring jobs to the disadvantage American kids, kids for example in the inner city whose whole futures depend on whether they are ever employed or not. Now what for the Americans that are age 16-30 now that Obama has just given away 1 million jobs?

And it wouldn't be so bad if these kids filled out their applications and the ICE agents then found the parents and other family members living here illegally and deported them. In fact this should make it very easy to know where the illegal parents are, find them, and send them home.

The problem is illegal immigration. And, the year is 2012, not 1860 or 1960. Illegal aliens, their greedy/unscrupulous employers, and our spineless government have created this problem, not racism or xenophobia. We all know the ugly history of our country. It is what it is, and nothing can change the past. However, today, we have THE most generous immigration record, which has allowed more legal immigration than all other countries combined. It's time to stop living in the past, and deal with our current problems.

I certainly agree with you here. I would just add that our policies do not discriminate against a certain group today so you are right what is the reason for bringing up the past then?

That sort of crap happened round the world. Things change and the US was BETTER than most places otherwise people wouldn't have come here. Sheesh!

Mexico can't talk; they robbed Spain of New Spain but no 1 today cares. The past is the past.

Black people: no 1 is telling them they can't leave the US; it's clear this country ain't that bad, even for x slaves.

I agree that in the year 2012 there are greedy employers. They do exploit immigrants.
