To me, NOT speaking it is a freedom at this point.

There is nothing wrong with this country having an official language to conduct its business in. Nothing at all. I don't give a crap what language you speak at home, with your friends, etc....nobody's saying you CAN'T speak your mother tongue anymore. Just have some effing respect and learn ENGLISH.

I will speak in a foreign language in public in this country and while people do stare, it doesn't bother me. I speak effing English...nobody needs to cater for me. When I visit foreign countries I don't expect them to cater to me. When I spent a summer in France, I never began a conversation by asking someone if they spoke English. I simply assumed they didn't, and started every conversation in French. People need to have some goddamn respect for other countries' cultures.

Businesses speak many languages and US should be allowed to evolve.
What if a new language appears, that is much more efficient, would you still be advocating English?

Maybe Spanish is the better language? Personally many Americans whom I speak to think Spanish IS a superior, better designed language that doesn't need so many words to express things. Conjugations are the toughest part for English speakers.

That is without a doubt the weakest argument for multi-lingualism that I've ever seen in my entire life.

Bravo!!!!!!!!!!

How efficient do you think it'll be to force hundreds of millions of monolingual Americans to adopt Spanish because of a recalcitrant minority that refuses to assimilate? I'll let you sell them that particular turd of an idea.

I speak several languages, including Spanish...and lemme tell you, Spanish is NOT more efficient. If anything it's a big fat pain in the a$$ with its dual genders for nouns, single and compound past tenses, use of the subjunctive, and two verbs that mean 'to be'. Seriously...I'm crying from laughter here.

Not allowing US to evolve its language is a weak argument?

If you honestly believe that adopting Spanish as an official language is 'evolving' then I've got some magic beans to sell you.

multi-lingualism is always going to be an option, hopefully. the more languages we know, the more educated we are considered. i, for one, advocate education. i hope you do too.

Have you not read a single thing I've said in this thread? You advocate education, yet you don't bother to capitalize your posts correctly.

I speak four languages, by the way. Fluently. I can read six languages, and I can even hobble along in a seventh.

I am not advocating an official language at all!!! I think Americans can decide what language to use, they don't need government telling them. It is a freedom.

im sorry that you find problem with my capitalization. it doesnt really affect your ability to read my posts properly though. i use correct punctuation and grammar, for the most part. education isnt about semantics, its about universal perspective used to achieve a full understanding of any given subject.

And do you believe that you're more educated than I am due to your stance on this issue?
