Cresitello debates immigration advocacy groups over 287(g) | Daily Record | Daily Record
Quote:
MORRISTOWN — Mayor Donald Cresitello defended his proposal to have local police enforce federal immigration laws during a forum Saturday that included a panel of immigration lawyers and advocates.
Quote:
Cresitello told the panel and about 75 people in the audience that he supports legal immigration and “strong border enforcement through 287(g).” He also said Morristown “has a history of dealing with people fairly,” and that police would be trained to not profile ethnic groups should the program be implemented here.

Quote:
Maria Martinez, 40, of Morristown, came to the U.S. from El Salvador in 1996. She said police officers should not double as immigration officers.

“The police need to be separate, and immigration separate,” she said.

She said many immigrants have left Morristown because of the proposal, and that undocumented immigrants who are crime victims might avoid calling police for fear of being deported.

If I don’t have papers, how am I going to call the police?,” she said. “It shouldn’t be that way.”
Hmm, perhaps getting said papers 'legally' would be useful, wouldn't it? It's only the law. Heaven forbid that such a crazy thing be followed.

Quote:
After the forum, Cresitello said he wasn’t swayed by arguments against 287(g). He claimed few members of the audience were from Morristown.

“I think (that) says that the people support the program,” he said.
I salute Mr. Cresitello. The law is the law and NOT ONE PERSON should be allowed to be above it or evade it because of his/her nationality/ethnicity/race/social status/religion/etc.

This should have convinced them long ago to end their sanctuary policies:

By now you have heard about the three young college students who were murdered execution-style in Newark, N.J., last week. Another student was shot in the head but survived.
What you might not have heard is that the shooter in this horrendous crime was in the country illegally.
This was not his first vicious crime. He was indicted last month for raping a five-year-old girl repeatedly over a four-year period and threatening to kill her family.

Although it is occurring almost 2 years after the aforementioned tragedy, I suppose better late than never . . . . .

I think your opinion on the matter might change if you were the victim of a crime, and a witness of the crime is illegal. The witness migh not be able to call for help or later go to the police with information regarding the crime, because the police is required to check their immigration status.

When I was back in AZ, I knew several cops that did not wanted to act as an immigration officer due to people being less able to report a crime or come forward with information they knew about a crime.

Question, is stealing a SS# a crime? If the police are called about a possible face SS# being presented shouldn't they be able to investigate that? Make an arrest if need be?
