No, mine were legal. Waited their turn to get in. Went to night school to learn English. What a difference 70 years makes.

Actually my great grandparents came here legally. They worked hard, raised 8 kids, owned a few businesses, didn't get handouts or brag about being illegal...
Why would you 'post' about being a law flouter unless you just want to 'show off' how your family 'beat the system?'

The most recent ancestor to immigrate to this country did so in 1905 on Russian papers. I've seen his entry on Ellis Island's website...he was 100% legal. All the others immigrated legally too.

I can not for the life of me understand how anyone could possibly be proud of parents that broke immigration laws and other laws to stay in a country they had no right to.

I understand your feelings.

The 'proud' part in particular.

That stated; many of our direct ancestors were probably 'illegal' at one time or another.

Mine weren't.

I had a lot of relatives who remained in Poland after WWII...those of them that survived it, anyway...and most of them are here now. They all immigrated legally. It took some of them years to do it, but they figured there was no stability or security in immigrating illegally, plus they wanted to respect their new homeland's laws. I've met my Polish-from-Poland relatives and while they all speak Polish with each other (and their American-born children), they all speak English. Some immigrated in their 60s and aren't completely fluent, but they don't have any trouble making themselves understood. The others have accents but their English is fine, and they all busted their butts to learn it. They all work, they all have insurance, they all pay taxes.

That's how it should be.
