Romney won't revoke young illegal immigrant visas

DENVER (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he would honor temporary work permits for young illegal immigrants who were allowed to stay in the U.S. because of an executive order signed this summer by President Barack Obama.

Romney told The Denver Post, in an interview appearing in Tuesday's edition, that people who are able to earn the two-year visas to stay and work wouldn't see them revoked under a Romney administration.

"The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I'm not going to take something that they've purchased," Romney told the Post, promising to put a comprehensive immigration reform plan into place before those visas expire.

In June, Obama issued an executive order that allows some young illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to avoid deportation. Romney criticized Obama for circumventing Congress to make the change a few months before the presidential election.

Gee, why am I not surprised?

Obviously this will require an act of a GOP controlled Congress to overturn.

A GOP congress isn't gonna do it either.

Sorry, but the Republican party is no more interested in coming down hard on this issue anymore than the Dems. Of course, you all knew that anyway. You just won't admit to it in front of liberals.

Repubs use the issue to get elected, and that's where it ends. And again, you all knew that too.

Umm....there's a difference between REVOKING a two-year special visa already in place and RENEWING that visa after he's President. That's why they're called TEMPORARY! What part of that is not understandable??????

Both parties have embraced amnesty even if they pass no law.

Ah yes. Nearly 2 million people will just turn in their work permits, driver licenses and social security cards, quit their legal jobs and go back to being illegals.

Let me ask you..have you ever seen an expiration date on a social security card ?

Who is running the country?

The American people or illegals? Seems like we have no representation in Washington. I rather have Romney than Obama. If Obama is re-elected he can do whatever he wants in his last term. We saw what he did with healthcare.

The temporary work visa must be renewed after two years, at which time the Romney Presidency will have to either continue the program or terminate the Executive Order. The point of the thread is to try to make it seem that Romney will continue the Obama Executive Order. That's not the case at all. He has merely stated that he won't revoke permits that have already been purchased. Those permits still expire, and he will have the option to not continue with the program, or not. He has stated several times that his plan is for immigration reform, not piecemeal pandering for votes.

If Romney does not revoke the illegal EO issued by Obama, then he is no better than Obama and condones circumventing Congress. Presidents are not suppose to legislate via EO.

Don't fool yourself. Two years is a long time and these legal illegals won't just give up their DL and SS and go back home.

We'll have amnesty in the next administration no matter who gets into office.
Congress has said/done nothing about this EO. Americans didn't get all upset. Both Romney and Obama are courting Hispanics.

Congress will end up passing an amnesty in the next 4 years.
