something that has not been mentioned so far is that although Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity programs benefit communities of color and women, the primary beneficiaries have been white women. This has even been confirmed by the U.S. Department of Labor, our government! Why then do so many talks of AA focus on racial/ethnic minorities? (Or like its some "Minority Entitlement Program?) (Focus on Affirmative Action (http://aapf.org/focus/episodes/oct30.php#AsianAmericans - broken link))

Also, just a minor correction to a previous poster, Mexico is predominately Mestizo, not Mulatto but Brazil has a very large mulatto/"pardo" population though.

Affirmative Action based on just race/ethnicity should be done away with.

Helping out Veterans or 'poor' people, etc. is something else admittedly-------many of the same above groups would still be targeted.

Why? Affirmative Action is done to promote diversity in our higher education and workforce.
There is a disproportionate number of whites and asians in colleges compared to Blacks and Latinos.

All of you who cant stop crying racist should read this.

And just so you know, Latinos have been a part of this country for a long long time. At least since the U.S. grabbed the southwest. Most of us are not immigrants.

Quite frankly:

What about so-called 'disadvantaged' groups like the Irish and Italians of 80+ years ago?

They succeeded despite that Affirmative Action nonsense which did not exist back then------there was a lot of prejudice against the above two ethnicities.

As for Blacks: from ca. 1945-71; they were advancing at a faster rate than any other race/ethnicity up the socio-economic ladder.

Now for 'Hispanics': does 'AA' apply only to short, brown Mestizos from Mexico or does it include all Hispanics------even Nordic White blue eyed blonds from Argentina or Spain?

In other words: AA is unmitigated nonsense which insinuates that certain 'minorities' are too weak/inept to compete in American society------assuming of course that Jim Crow laws have been repealed.

Asians: their basic cultures demand excellence; at least those folks here in the USA. Besides: most Mestizos and Indians (both American and east) are also of Asian genetic stock.

This was an class assignment I had to write about many years ago. My opinion has not changed one bit. Affirmative Action is welfare for higher education -- an educational handout. And because of it, women and people of color who don't pass the SAT and other college entrance exams, physical tests for police and firefighter jobs feel they are entitled to go to college, or become police officers and firefighters even though they are not qualified to do so.

Don't even get me started on how colleges have to create remedial classes to teach these welfare caseloads basic speaking, writing, reasoning and math skills when they show up for school. It's a shame, really.

Its easier for the Irish and Italians to succeed when they are WHITE.
Most hispanics are NOT white.
And that was then, this is now.
Its not insinuating they are too weak, but that they are misrepresented, and things need to be evened out.

Im really tired of white people crying about affirmative action.
Its not like any white people aren't getting in to school because of it.
