CONWAY - The Hispanic community has a "disconnect" with non-Hispanics on the issue of illegal immigration, Gov. Mike Beebe told a group of University of Central Arkansas students Wednesday.
Beebe was fielding students' questions in a public forum on the UCA campus when a student mentioned legislation in Congress that would put children of illegal immigrants on a path toward citizenship, as long as they came to the U.S. with their families before turning 16 and they plan to attend college or join the military.

I guess this is a positive step towards Illegals wanting to assimilate into American culture. I mean, if they're going to be tax paying citizens soon with a good education why not? The kids aren't the criminals in this case since they we're forced by their parents to come here with them.
I don't support it; it's an incentive/motivation for illegals to come here.
In all fairness; I can see 'grandfathering' in those kids brought here illegally prior to a certain date: i.e. January 1st, 2008 then denying any smuggled in afterwards. But; kick out their family members age 18 up if they are illegal-----no matter when they crossed the border.
So; the ones who were grandfathered in would need to stay with friends or legal relatives.......otherwise, adios.
No grandfathering at all. That just encourages the illegals and they ALL need to be deported. No AMNESTY for any illegal, no matter how and why they are here.
Interesting article. I'd suspect that non-Hispanics in Central Arkansas probably DO have this "disconnect", and probably a lot of other disconnects as well, with the mainstream American viewpoint. I don't know how representative this area is of the US population as a whole.
Having many close family ties with the Hispanic population of California, I can assure you that most of the folks I know have a serious disconnect with racists---white, brown, or otherwise---but are pretty much against the concept of uncontrolled ilegal immigration. Even ethnic and family ties don't obscure the fact that this simply can't continue indefinitely. These folks see themselves as Americans, and as such, they are threatened by illegal immigration----economically and otherwise.
But of course, that's only the people I know....they, too, might not represent the thinking of the US population as a whole....

I'm with you on that one.
