Because it's all about politics.

If we secure our border:

1) the Mexican government would be angry at us, because many of their citizens work illegally in the US and send money back home.

2) The Europeans and others, would call us a evil nation of heartless, xenophobic meanies

3) Political action groups will vilify and attempt to politically destroy anyone who was in favor of border security

4) Some businesses lobby government to keep a weak border, to provide them with cheap labor

5) Lastly, it would cost an enormous amount of taxpayer money to secure the border.

I am friends with a formerly illegal immigrant. His mother found someone to give her a green card, though, so now he's a citizen.

The Europeans decided to implement strict policies themselves now. Why would they be hypocrites?

Furthermore, are people blind to the long term costs of having money siphoned out of this nation, possibly for the rest of this nations life?

Citizens don't get green cards.

People get green cards, then later they become citizens.

Mexico itself would not tolerate the most impoverished Americans moving en masse into Mexico.

Mexico's own immigration laws are much stricter (and smarter) than ours. You won't see La Raza protesting it's country's immigration laws.

Don't seem to mind that then why not live anywhere south of the Mexican border for one year then come back and tell us how great it was?

So why is the Republican and Independent base not doing anything about it?
