I am 19.

I keep hearing people say you need a 4 year degree, others are saying you only need a certificate(of who knows what really) and others are saying you only need a high school diploma.

People have been saying mutliple things about hiring and future employment opportunities as well. Some are saying Border Patrol are in need of new people, and others are saying they are not accepting people and cutting back. Seriously, what is the current situation?

Since alot of people here seem to talk about illegal immigration, i think it is safe to say some of you know a border patrol agent that knows the current situation, right?

I checked there website, and have no idea what they are really saying

I just want to know what you guys know(if you do, please no opinions or speculations) before i call them. Thank you

One thing I do know....you can pretty much forget about being hired to work on the US/Mexico border if you don't speak Spanish.

And you won't be on the US/Canadian border unless you have tenure under your belt.

Your odds are better going for Customs Agent. For that, though, a Bachelor's would serve you better.

How familiar are you with the federal hiring regimen?

1. You don't qualify for employment, at this time. 2. Call the agency for specifics.

Really? I would have thought federal LE pre-requisites would be more stringent than those for local peace officers...most depts around here require a 4-year degree from what I hear. I've never tried to get a job as a cop so I wouldn't know, but I do know a couple of real live police officers (eek) and they have 4-year degrees...earned prior to joining the police.

OTOH, it does make me wonder what you learn in college that would be more relevant to the job of patrolling the US border than what you would learn via on-the-job experience.

I've check the site with requirements.

If you have a 4 year degree great. If you have a 2 year degree you can use related work experience the've listed to apply.

So if you have an AA and a few years in LE, that's as good as a 4-year degree. Gotcha.

I do think that Spanish should be mandatory for border patrol agents; it's one of the only positions where I think Spanish is an absolute requirement. I think our agents should also be somewhat conversant in Mandarin Chinese and a middle eastern language or two; we get a lot of fence jumpers from those areas as well...on the Canadian border too. It's not Canadians sneaking across the border...unless they're dealing on the black market.
