Well, sweetheart...just in the last two days, on this very board, I've heard "Why should I study geography? I'm not going anywhere."
"Why should I learn the metric system?"
"Why should I learn another language?"
That last one was yours, I believe.

Learning another language is not all that unless you plan to travel and use it the rest of your life.
I took Spanish, French and Italian in school but never used it after that.
In retrospect..should have been able to take other electives.

Since you live in Canada, is english embraced in the whole country or, is it as I've been led to believe that in some parts of Canada english is discouraged and French is dominant?
Yes, French is dominant in some parts. I speak French, so it's not a problem. I also speak English, Russian, Spanish and Polish. What's your point?
Learning doesn't hurt.
I'm not saying Americans should be forced to speak Spanish, but the concept of "Why should I learn another language" is pretty stupid.

I use different languages all the time and I don't travel or use it for anything work related.

Probably because we don't have a official language.

I don't think thats a terrible idea but it really wouldn't benefit us a whole lot.

That doesn't mean they aren't willing to learn other things. Perhaps they just don't want to learn those particular things because they don't interest them. Besides, you are using this forum as an example of Americans not wanting to learn anything? Stereotyping much?

I have no interest in studying cake baking. Does that mean that I don't want to learn "anything"?

By the way I am not your sweetheart and besides I am a male not a female.

I see, so because English isn't our "official" language but it is our de facto national language immigrants shouldn't have to learn it?

Yeah sure. Do what you want to do then but don't expect other Americans to follow suit. It is a personal choice and Americans shouldn't be called lazy or stupid just because they don't want to learn another langauge that they will never use.

No it isnt'! If one knows or feels they will never use it the stupidity would be to waste time learning it.
