Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets "the equilibrium of the national demographics." When foreigners are deemed detrimental to economic or national interests, when they have broken Mexican laws, they are jailed or deported. Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. Mexicans who help illegals enter the country are themselves considered criminals. A Mexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to five years in prison. And no foreigner may engage in political affairs, in any manner. If a foreigner wishes to reside in Mexico, he or she must have a guaranteed job or be financially independent, and must prove an income from abroad consisting of pensions or investments four hundred times the minimum wage in Mexico City (monthly). This amount represents approximately $1,500 in U.S. dollars per month.

We already knew the Mexican government was hypocritical, but it's good to be reminded of it.

This has been discussed before....Compare our behavior with that of Mexico all day long, but you won't get anywhere, because it's a cultural issue. America is a modern, secular, puritan-based culture with an enormous capacity for guilt built into the national character. We react to criticism, feel "bad" about it, and "beat ourselves up" at the thought we might be doing "bad" things---this forum is an excellent example of that. Criticize the United States, and you get a lot of "bang for your buck".
Not only that, but we'll actually HELP you criticize us !...

Mexico is more typical of most of the world's cultures. You can criticize it all day long, but you won't get much reaction. That societal "guilt" just isn't there. For the most part, you'll be "shouting into the wind". Do the Russians ,or the Chinese, or the Iranians react to criticism, and do they feel "just terrible" when they annoy us? Of COURSE not---and neither does Mexico. Societal guilt is a modern, western, liberal invention.

I do not feel 'guilty' because of what some of my ancestors did--------we do not pick 'em.

Good for you---you SHOULDN'T feel this guilt. Obviously, many Americans do--as can be seen on this forum....and many OTHERS are happy to AGREE with these "guilty" Americans....and even suggest MORE reasons they should feel responsible for all sorts of problems, all over the world.

Remember, Columbus, (not an American, but the quintessential "westerner") almost single-handedly destroyed the entire Western Hemisphere---bringiing in everything from slavery to syphilis, from gunpowder to smallpox.....at least, that's the prevailing wisdom. Boy, he must have been a "busy man"!! (Father Serra, builder of the California Missions, wasn't much better, either--or so we're told)
