The debate surrounding this bill was so bogus. Both parties wanted amnesty.
Having umpteen border guards is not a concession because they can quickly be recalled. There will be some war or emergency and they will just be reassigned to other duties.
A permanent barrier would have been a better solution, with a patrol and removing any buildings and brush on our side to help prevent tunneling.
Border Guards? Ill take it that your not an American. In the United States our border guard (the US Border Patrol) is a civilian police force with pistols ... they are not part of the Army or a branch of the military like in most countries.
In any rate you are correct in your assessment. Not to mention that their level of effectiveness is dependent on politics. The Democratic Party is notoriously lax on border security and the Republican party is barely better.

Correct the bill actually leaves enforcement at the discretion of the head of HLS. Our current head is notoriously lax.

It's all another load of Obama sh*t. Just like in 1986, all the promises of border security (and fences) will be quietly put on the back burner once the bill is passed.
12 million illegals (plus all the family members) will bankrupt the country with the rush for government
handouts and food stamps. All the low level, uneducated, unskilled S.O.B. workers will rush the border.
They have no intention of adding more border patrol agents. The current bill also has so much pork in
it that it's starting to resemble that pig Harry Reid.

It most certainly is a very bad bill for America.
This bill is to the rule of law what a sword in the back is to good posture.

Doubling the amount of Border Patrol agents in the Southwest seems hard to imagine for me - We crossed over briefly last Saturday, and saw about 50 deployed Border Patrol vehicles over the span of just a couple hours. If that doubles, someone could drive along the border, and see an agent every minute or two.
I'm sure Ford appreciates selling (and maintaining) all of those custom pickups, vans, and Crown Vics. The small border communities probably get quite a bit of their economy from the agents. What is the cost in our taxes from that however?
I agree that having more border agents won't do much of anything -- especially because like now they're not able to do much of anything about illegals coming over except help them. I live on the border and you don't really see all that many except sometimes parked outside some diner where they're having lunch but their hands are pretty much tied when it comes to apprehending illegals. Once the illegals are inside the border a few feet, they're pretty much home free and can do whatever they please.
Most illegals get some kind of border crossing card or they get their own legally issued one and then just overstay it by never going back home.
It would be far better to end the handouts and other rewards that await the illegals. End birthright citizenship, end welfare handouts to the parents that are here illegally for anchor babies. Prosecute those who hire illegals and stop promising them that they'll be handed all kinds of prizes if they come here illegally like US citizenship.

You maintain that you don't see Border Patrol agents, and that they aren't doing anything, but there sure is many of them driving around...

What is the cost to taxpayers of educating large families, providing social services for them, and the closing of many hospitals where they are sorely needed?
One must weigh one cost against the other, to be fair.
