It's better than just crossing the border illegally.
At least the USG knows how many immigrants are crossing.

Mexicans are seeking asylum because of fear of the drug cartels.
200 showed up at a CA crossing in one day and overwhelmed them with processing.

That puts their coming and staying here in the hands of the USG.

Scam and nothing more. The only people the cartels target are those involved with it and the drug cartel wars are limited to only certain regions. Nothing prevents these people running from their cartel from relocating to safe areas of Mexico where the cartels aren't at war.

It's all about the easy money and big government handouts in the USA. Refugees get some real nice free handouts -- free housing, food stamps.

Mexico is a democracy, these people elect their leaders.

You're right, gee the only place they can flee to is our country. There is no where in Mexico where they could flee to that would be safe. Why do they never flee to countries south of their own border? The answer is obviously put by you and the fact that we are only enforcing our immigration laws against those in our country illegally who are "convicted felons."

Birthright citizenship is a big attractor.

Only 30 countries still honor birthright citizenship. Of those 30 only the US and Canada are considered advanced economies.
Many countries have removed this from their laws in the past 10 years to curb growing illegal immigration into their countries by the poor and those seeking citizenship for their children for a future date (birth tourism).
