"If Texas Representative Ted Poe was looking for reassurance that backing an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws won't be political suicide for conservatives like him, he may have found it this week at a seafood restaurant on the outskirts of Houston..."

Quietly, businesses help reshape US immigration debate

From the article

Immigration reform has long been a top priority for business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which say that current laws and regulations make it too difficult to find workers they can't recruit at home and expose businesses to a tangle of conflicting labor regulations.

So is it really about needing a more robust guest worker program? Rep. Poe seems to be playing politics.

There's nothing quiet about it if you have been following the immigration debates.
Congress is doubling H1B visas and tacking on an automatic annual percentage increase.
They are also expanding work visas so that more can come here to work the lower paying jobs.

If you think this was all being done "on the quiet" then you have not been paying attention.

The work visas will be for 3 years and extendable and the workers can bring their families
These are new "W" visas and they can apply for green cards

Also no cap on STEM jobs and this is the biggie.

From the OP link:

"..Business groups mobilized an army of lobbyists to push for passage of a sweeping immigration bill by the Democrat-controlled Senate in June. The bill - backed by 14 of the Senate's 46 Republicans and all 52 Democrats..."

Stupid, real stupid. We're still in a real bad recession and some people want MORE immigration? IMHO it's time to cut off most immigration for a few years.
