In many older societies, things are more "set in stone".. Even in prosperous countries such as Europe, there is far less opportunity to "move around" in a career. In the US, a person with great drive and the willingness to work long hours and "deny" himself, really DOES have a shot at becoming a millionaire. But for those who are LAZY, the US is a harsh place--we don't have the safety net that socialist nations have.

This is something I've heard again and again. I know several FORMER illegals who invested in trashy "rental" units, fixed them up, and are now RICH. Back home, they couldn't do this. But I've also known some immigrants who are happy with "just enough money to get by". In America, you have that choice. It is a "touchy" subject, but some of this has to do with culture. Some cultures emphasize higher education and "getting ahead" far more than others. Here, they can do that. Other cutures emphasize just "buying a lot of 'stuff' "...and you can do that, too. In America, the choice is yours..at least, that's the 'theory"......
Interesting, I guess that it's part of the American culture to use your brain and wit to make money, rather than depending on a higher education you can do it if you are ambitious and willing to work long hours.

Now imagine you have the entire world for you to pursue your dreams, you can look for jobs in the country which has the highest demand and pays the better wages for your skills, you can also charge in the currency that has the highest value or in one of the most stables.

Imagine that travelling around the world and absorbing the best of each culture helps you to have a wider scope of things, and use that knowledge to become a better person, a better friend, parent, spouse, son and brother, to know when it's best to invest in one country, or buy goods in a country where they are cheap and importing them to another where they are expensive, and taking advantage of the free trade treaties to pay few taxes so you can offer competitive prices.

Imagine unleashing the great powers that internet gives you to learn new skills, make new contacts or create new and wonderful ways of working without having to break your back to make ends meet.

Those are some of the wonders of a global world, and being a global player, should we fear the unknown? or should we use our resources to eat a piece of that cake?

it's up to you to decide my brothers, my dear brothers

what is the real reason of their emigration?A free ride? Health care? Living off the American people? There are some hard working illegals. There is no doubt about it. In this area they do not try to draw attention to themselves. They are paid "under the table" which is a burden on America. You've heard the wages differences. The illegals I have a problem with are young males. In my experiences with illegals.
Who's the typical emigrant? It used to be illegals that basically want to live the American dream although I am against anyone that starts this by being a criminal. Now we are having problems with the trash of Mexican society. Criminals, gangs and the illegals that think we must give them anything they want. That they are a special group allowed to break our laws and terrorize people.

He/She does not come from the poorest states of Mexico. So why do they come? As I said above. Create a burden, steal jobs and wreak havoc in our smallest of towns.

He/She is not usually among the poorest of Mexicans.

The emigrants or would be emigrants ILLEGALS, come from 9% of the population only, the other 91% has never and will never emigrate. I believe it to be opposite.

we are trying to find out why do they emigrate, what lures them to the United States of America aren't we? I think I answered it above. Besides our jails and prisons are so politically correct. They beat being in a Mexican prison.

Is becoming a millionaire part of the American dream? I think it is apart of anyone's dream whatever country they are in. The USA is just thought to be the easiest place to do it.

could this be the reason that thousands of people from the 4 corners of the world immigrate legally or illegally to America?

Maybe we found the real reason! No, There are some...A LOT that just want a free ride and live off of those who live here. Breaking in homes and taking what they want, robbing stores etc.

Should this dream be shared with your brothers who were born in different countries? Yes, LEGALLY

Yes? No? Why yes? and why not?
Yes, I would love to be a Millionaire. Why? Yes, I would like the money for myself. But there has been so much I would like to do. People I'd like to help I have been in contact with. No, not as a whole group but individuals.

I'd love to help my best friend. His wife is on Chemo. They rent a dump and eat very little to just pay the utility bills. I have bought what I can to help. Yes, there are Americans that do not eat enough because they don't have money. He did raise a garden this year. That helped a lot. But then he's got to afford the electric for the freezer. I'd love to buy him a nice house and pay their utility bills for at least 2 years. That would get him on his feet. And he works 12 hour days. 6 days a week. They tried for Tenn care. They were denied. He made 10.00 too much.

My girlfriend- She works her fanny off. Always has. She went thru a divorce and he cleaned her clock. I asked her to move in with us because she couldn't afford to rent anything. She lived with us 1 yr and got on her feet. She remarried last year. It takes him and her both to make ends meet. I GAVE them a mobile home so they would have a place to live. It wasn't in perfect condition but didn't need much repair either. Randy really made it look nice. Our house burnt a few years back. The heat pump was ok after the fire so I gave that to them for heating and cooling.

Right now, My hubby and I are struggling. No, we don't have a mega TV. My pc is 7 years old and has it's better days. I drive a 1983 AMC Eagle SX/4 by choice. I can't afford a new car anyway and wouldn't have one either. I love AMC.

Christmas. Forget it. I had to explain to my kids this year is bad. I will get them something idk what yet. They are older but it's still nice to open a present on Christmas morning. My husband is starting a new business. It's been tough. He's an owner operator and between the extreme high costs of fuel, Insurance that is out of sight and repairs. It doesn't leave much to even exist. Freight prices have went way down...Guess why? Mexican trade and drivers that are willing to make 19 cents a mile for teams. In other words 1 driver makes 9.5 cents a mile. How can an American driver compete? They can't. Not with our cost of living.

I read your story Starwalker, and I found it disturbing, your conditions sound similar to those of the would be emigrant

I wish you a merry christmas though, full of blessings and smiles think of it as a moment to be with the family, to enjoy your kids and your husband and be together.

Hmmmm I ignored this fact about the freighters, how much does the average American operator earn?

I'm shocked now, I don't have words honestly I just can say God bless you and might he help you and bless you and your family. Have a beautiful christmas

For your reasons America must fight against illegals.
They are taking money away from people like you.
I mean 10.00 over how embarrassing for our country. You belong here and should be getting help. Maybe if it was not going to feed/house/give medical to illegals there would be more for our people.

I don't understand how the politicians are for the illegals having in this country when there are people like you here. Wouldn't they better serve their country if they address this issue of poverty that is at our back door?

It has been amazing to me to see how they tried to push the amnesty through 3 times in a few months, such diligence why don't they do that with really important issues that face our Nation?

May God shine on you and your family and may he guide you in a direction of change. I hope that 2008 is a great year for you and you can get your business going strong.
My words cannot do anything other than offer some hope in a sad situation I know this I do hope that they offer some comfort knowing that others will be praying for you and your family.
May God keep you warm in his embrace and safe in his arms.

Hello Traveling Fella and Miborn. Yes, it is extremely tough and thank you so much. Your words have brightened me up a bit.

Mark got good news yesterday. Karens cancer is acting positively to the Chemo. It's a type of cancer she has. Not actually the type that eats away but what is causing irritation of her digestive system. She's getting better. She still has many weeks to go before they know if it's been a complete & permanent success.

Traveling Fella, No our conditions are not the same. I am usually the brightest star shining and try to be friends with everyone I meet but with the illegals. It's very hard to remain light spirited.

It does hurt and irritate me that Americans. Any American would say that it's ok for them to be here and take the jobs, live cramped up so they can hoard money that they pay NO taxes on, Use our health care systems up so we can't use them to help us, not even getting into the crime rate.

All thru the years. It really hasn't effected us Whom ever was President. The last year has been horrible. Geoge Bush has no B___S to stop it. It's the ILLEGALS fault. You keep saying immigrants. They are NOT immigrants. They are ILLEGALS. As I said to you before. I would not, could not or would I ever invade your country. They are invading ours to a rediculously massive extent. I have no problem with anyone from any country immigrating here. LEGALLY.

My parents say I make them laugh so much. lol I danced with my daddy today.

I lay most of the blame on our 'leadership'-------Bush 43 on down.

If the punishment for hiring a known illegal was stiff enough.....and, the odds of getting caught were high--------trust me: the former would self deport very rapidly and the ones who are truly insolent, well, there are tent cities that can be built in North Dakota

If tents are good enough for our Armed Forces; they sure as hell are good enough for illegal immigrants who break the law over and beyond crossing our borders.

That's a blessing

Starwalker, I just send you a DM with an idea on how could we, both Mexicans and Americans benefit from the Nafta instead of being affected by it.

Love and Light!

i am and English woman born and bred in Great Britain, we have always prided ourselves on the tolerance of visitors to our country, yes i agree some imigrants do take advantage and are not liked for this, but we all live on this planet together and we should get along despite creed or colour, i would hope that if i wanted to live and work in the USA i would be made to feel welcome as you all would be here.

if you read them, as someone who lives here i know what I'm talking about, people who works here in construction aren't exactly poor, the same with bakers, blacksmiths and most "blue collar" jobs.

do they earn the wages that an American citizen earns? no
do they earn wages to have a reasonable life in this country? yes

to give you an example, my house was recently remodeled, we hired 2 workers who charged about 300 dollars weekly, that's 1,200 dollars a month, $600 for each one of them, for Mexican standards is not a bad salary, considering what they do.

in the USA, they would have earned from 7.50 to 12 dollars per hour, let's imagine they worked for 8 hours a day making 10 dollars that'd be 80 dollars daily, 400 dollars weekly and 1,600 dollars monthly

$600 vs $1600 is a big difference, but it's that big really considering the differences in living costs?

what is the real reason of their emigration?

Who's the typical emigrant?

He/She does not come from the poorest states of Mexico.

He/She is not usually among the poorest of Mexicans.

The emigrants or would be emigrants, come from 9% of the population only, the other 91% has never and will never emigrate.

we are trying to find out why do they emigrate, what lures them to the United States of America aren't we?

otherwise what would be the purpose of this dialogues?

we are trying to look it from every side, considering all the posibilities:
the fence has been mentioned
the north american union has been mentioned
the deport them all solution has been mentioned
the autodeport them removing the benefits have been mentioned

all this solutions by different forum members, which is the right one, and why?

we are all trying to find the answers and solutions aren't we, every one from a different perspective, I don't want to close my mind to any posibility, at least until all of them are clearly examined and disected into the light of introspection and wisdom.

Wrong. At least here in New Jersey. Most of the undocumented Mexican immigrants here come from the two poorest states of Mexico: Oaxaca & Guerrero. I became friends with an immigrant from the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca where thousands are now in New Jersey cities. We began dating and I accompanied her on a trip to her town in 1998. The people are hard working corn farmers who barely survive from selling their corn to the Mexican government. They send family members to work in the US to buy healthier food, to put a concrete floor in their home or to buy medicine for sick relatives. The reason they come here is because they are poor and ignored by the Mexican government. Whether that should be the United State's problem is another story. To suggest that the poorest of Mexico are not coming to the US is not a true statement.
