An illegal immigrant is dead after a routine traffic stop.
Tucson Police say one of their officers shot an illegal immigrant after a violent altercation Saturday night. It happened around 8 p.m. on the south side near Mission and Irvington Roads.
TPD says Officer Douglas Dreher, a two year veteran, pulled over a car with expired registration. When the officer asked for a license, the driver admitted he was an illegal immigrant. When Officer Dreher went back to his car and called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the driver and passenger took off on foot.
Officer Dreher caught up to the driver and began fighting. The suspect allegedly punched the officer then ended up getting a hold of his baton.

It's sad that a person had to die, but I wonder if the illegal alien was thinking when he told him he was illegal. Perhaps he thought he should get a pass or something?

No matter who the person was, where they were from, or what their citizenship status was, the officer would have used deadly force (as he should have), so why is this at all remarkable?
I don't think officers are supposed to shoot to kill if the suspect has no weapons on him. In this case he should of shot him in the feet or tazered him. His illegal status has really nothing to do with the officers routine traffic stop. Its really a matter of excess force.

This was all over the news here, John
Just another example of the overall disrespect towards our Laws and our Law Enforcement Officers.
Great job Officer Dreher! Any time a suspect takes a baton away from a cop and attacks him with it he's committing assault with a deadly weapon. Maybe even attempted murder depending on the circumstances. This is just another example of a crime that wouldn't have happened if the border was secured.
But I have to say, I'm sure glad Johnny Sutton isn't the local prosecutor in Tucson.

I have to accept, that this time even though I hate to know that someone died, if he was agressive and threathened the cop he put himself in this situation, the cop was just defending himself, and this could have happened with a citizen as well, people die in these ways all the time, the fact that he was an illegal changes nothing what happened, except for the fact that it provides a good argument on why Immigration should be controlled in some way.

Then you should be in Albuquerque telling the officers there that because they shoot to kill suspects all of the time and many times the person was armed with a baseball bat standing over 50 ft away, no real honest threat to life.
The illegal should not have been stupid enough to be in an altercation with a cop because the one who is not a cop will lose most of the time. Glad that the cop gets to go home and be with his family though.
