"My son opened the door and there was a man standing there bleeding," said Echaniz. "It's like leaving your front door open and locking everything else so anyone can come in."
But now after years of fighting for help, Dorine and her neighbors can feel a sense of relief as crews work to build a real fence, and bridge the gap, even though one lawmaker said it's completely unnecessary.
Border fences sound sexy and fun, but most of these people cross legally and then end up staying illegally. Fences mean nothing as long as there is employment here. It's a whole lot of building for nothing, a Band-Aid.

UH; fences DO work if backed up with guards who can do their job. The Berlin Wall did, Spain has fences on its land across on Africa, Israel has a fence to keep the Palestinians OUT and so on.

That's just it -- the many thousands coming in where there is no fence or through holes in the fence very often have serious criminal histories and can't even buy that easy border crossing card for $160 that is the way so many come "legally" but then go where ever they please and never return home.
There is little enforcement of the immigration laws. The border crossing cards are supposed to allow tourists and visitors but are being abused in a very big way.
Fences are for controlling cattle who can not figure out a way to get around it. We don't need fences for illegals...we need cops who will enforce the law.

Then why are there so many fences that have nothing to do with cattle? Fences around schools, around businesses, around prisons, around parks where no cattle are, even around people's houses and yards?
Fences are everywhere. Except the border where millions of people choose to break the laws.
No way should these people in this article have to live in fear like this -- especially living next to one of the most dangerous cities in the world where the worst kinds of thugs may use the border to escape justice -- kill and behead someone and there's the open border right there where you can easily run from your own country's police.
That doesn't mean that laws can't ALSO be enforced. Enforcement of the laws most definitely should occur and the non-enforcement and even promises of huge rewards to those who break the laws is a big problem.
My point is that only dumb animals can be stopped by a fence most of the time. A border fence could divert the illegals BUT NOT STOP THEM.
Uh; a border fence WILL stop MOST illegal aliens from trying to cross. Tho that fence would need to be "Berlin Wall", Gaza Strip or higher spec to work IMHO.

A physical barrier would help the Border Patrol immensely erected on the most porous areas. The double layered wall along 700 miles of our southern border which was approved by congress but never funded would have reduced illegal immigration quite a lot. That should be the goal. No one saying that it would end it altogether. I have found that those who object to it have a hidden agenda to want illegal immigration to continue unfettered.

If you've never visited the Big Bend area of Texas, for example, you can't comprehend the vast remoteness of so many of these areas. Most of the land, outside of the park, is also privately owned ranches, zillions of acres each. I think most people think of the area between San Diego and Tijuana when they think of the border. I can't even imagine how they would go about building fences along the Texas-Mexico in the most remote parts even if I DID think it was a good idea.
