If Mexicans crossed the border into OUR country and pointed guns at US border patrol officers IN THE USA why not just shoot the bastards. Military or not, they are invading our country and should be shot in that situation IMO. Then go shoot the smugglers the bastards were covering for.

Well first, the Mexican soldiers probably thought they were the ones facing the incursion. If you've ever read about these things, you'd know these kind of incidents are fairly common. As US Border Patrol Agents themselves have said when asked about it, over many parts of the border it's very poorly defined and both Mexican and US officials can often find themselves accidentally on the wrong side of the border. With Mexican troops trying to catch drug cartel foot soldiers coming back into Mexico, it's easy for something like this to happen they come across armed people and don't realize they're on the wrong side of the border.
Second, shooting them would only make it worse. It means that when Americans accidentally find themselves on the wrong side (and it happens), the Mexicans are more likely to shoot them. There's no reason to shoot anyone, it's not an invasion by a hostile enemy, just an accident committed by a well-meaning, but somewhat lost ally.

I was going to comment, but I see that you have already said what I would have, so I will just comment on the second part, shooting will make it worse and these accidents do happen, however, by some of the posters here, you would think that we were at war with Mexico and that they were a hostile enemy and not our ally.
I was just replying how I read the posts and what I pictured. Usually there is much more to the story, especially little bits on web forums.
Yes I can understand that kind of terrain, unmarked, can be difficult in places to tell where the actual border is and in that kind of situation what I asked would not have been the best to do. However I was under the impression that they were aiding smugglers and/or being hostile. I may have mis read or may have just been plain wrong. Not the first time and sure won't be the last for either.

Allies don't allow millions of their citizens to come to our country illegally and then meddle in our affairs by demanding that they be allowed to stay here.
