If it isn't an amnesty it is certainly the next best thing and at the very least it is rewarding them for their criminal behavior.
^So very true!

Simpler solution: You can come here if you can find a job here. You can stay if you can keep a job and not break any laws, etc. Becoming a citizen should be a much faster process as well. Maybe not easier, just faster. The fact that doing things legally takes such an agonizingly long time tends to make illegal immigration a lot more appealing alternative.

Most of the current estimated 12 million illegals would be legal residents if we'd fixed those things the last time around.
You do realize that we have annual quotas for good reasons, don't you? They are in place to protect American jobs and resources and to control our population growth. We should just shove aside those sane policies so that any foreigner that wants to come here and offers to work for less than an American and therefore reduce American wages should be able to do so? How long before our natural and social resources run dry? Oh goody, it will be a rush to the bottom and we'll become a third world, slave country. Is that what you want?

The problems is that we're trying to hold back a huge river and only letting the tiniest trickle get through. The result:

It's not working. As we stubbornly insist upon keeping the numbers of legal immigrants very low, the illegals will just continue to skip that process entirely. This damages our faith in and the relevance of the tortuously long and painful legal route to residence. So what are we doing about it? In terms of the dam metaphor, we are closing the spillway even further and furiously shaking our fist at the water pouring over the top of the dam for it's rude behavior. And then we wonder why this approach isn't working. The obvious solution that we're refusing to see: Open the spillway as wide as possible and save the dam. That means that if you must use quotas, you drastically increase the number. Probably do at least ten times as much as we are currently.

Once here legally, it tends to sort itself out. We're not living in the wild, immoral and completely unregulated days of the Industrial Revolution. We have laws in place that protect the American people from exploitative employers. If you're still worried about the USA becoming a nation of virtual slaves, you'd want to strengthen those laws and you'd to do it at the state level to maximize effectiveness. Every new immigrant to the United States needs food, clothing, utilities, a roof over their head, entertainment, computers, school supplies for their kids, etc. ... basically the same stuff as everyone else. This means demand for goods and services increases at roughly the same rate as the population increases. The demand for high skill and high pay job goes up. The demand for moderate skill jobs goes up. The demand for low skill jobs goes up.

Quotas were an interesting way of projecting American xenophobia, but I am not even slightly convinced that they're actually helping or protecting us in any useful way.

Godofthunder---Do you think that we have unlimited buildable land and potable water? In fact, we are running out of potable water and only have a finite amount of buildable land.

If this nightmare of a so-called "immigration reform" bill should pass, due to chain migration, it will eventually add 36 million more people to our population. To give you some perspective, 36 million is the population of Canada.

If we don't make life so hard for illegal aliens that they will self-deport and don't reduce legal immigration, it won't be long before we look like India---a country with over 1 billion people and not enough potable water.

I want better than that for my grandkids. Don't you want the same?

If we truly enforced our immigration laws there would be no deluge coming here and it would be "working". E-verify, deny benefits and birthright citizenship for their kids and it would go along ways in deterring illegal immigration.

Our quotas are already based on our need for immigrants and our ability to supply them with jobs and resources without it impacting our own citizens negatively. Why would you want to change that sane policy? You'd rather see our own citizens suffer to cater to more foreigners that "just want to come here"? Come on! What are we? The flophouse to the whole world?

How are Americans going to buy all the things you mentioned and contribute to our economy and tax coffers if there is too much foreign competition for jobs? What are they supposed to do?

Oh boy, here comes the race card. How are we xenophobic since we already have every conceivable race/ethnic group/nationality here already "legally"? You're grasping at straws now.

E verify, English ONLY for EBT, driver's licenses, no more birthright citizenship unless 1 parent is here legally, ANY run in with the cops if there's "probable cause" to arrest an illegal alien AND have ICE back them up. MOST illegals will get the hint and leave because it'd be too dangerous to stay here. The few hold outs who TRY to stay here WILL lay real low to avoid being picked up.

I guarantee everyone here that amnesty will pass. The Republicans will vote yes for it because they will get something out of it (perhaps the pipeline? perhaps something else?) from the Democrats in a backroom deal. Both sides will come out holding hands and display big smiles and both will say it was a bi-partisan effort. They will make a big speech talking about immigration being the backbone of the USA... blah, blah, blah. This is what happens when Americans keep voting for the same two parties over and over and over and over again. Most Americans are too busy on their smartphones to understand what is going on or really don't care. Sheep mentality.

-Cheers.

I have faith that no amnesty will pass. Why would the GOP pass it when it would mean that down the road once these illegals become citizens they will vote Democrat?

I think that the one thing that's keeping amnesty from passing is that Americans are letting their reps and senators know that they don't want it.

If amnesty was so popular with Americans and democrats supposedly want it, then why didn't they ram it through and cram it down our throats when they had a majority house and senate during the first two years of Obama's first term? They could have done it but didn't. Invasion cheerleaders really need to think about this.

The lamestream media wants us all to think that the majority of Americans want this to pass. When, in reality, they know that this isn't the case.
