There is such a thing as obesity and starvation concomitantly. It is called kwashiorkor, and seen in third world countries where there is malnutrition. This particular problem from high carbohydrate, protein deficient diet.

That's bloated bellies from starvation and edema -- that's not fat -- it's edema caused by no protein intake -- obesity has to do with excessive calories.

Mexico does not have kwashiorkor.

Although rare, kwashiorkor and merasmus seen in US, may even be on the rise due to "fad" diets, eating disorders, etc. Not sure what the incidence is in Mexico. In 2004 WHO listed Mexico as second in the world for per capita deaths due to kwashiorkor. Obesity does not equal good nutrition and these people can also be very malnourished.

Even if 100% true; Mexico's elite needs to be shamed into action-------maybe if we as a nation kept the lid clamped tight atop the cauldron AKA as Mexico--------things will change for the better.

No more relief valve directed towards the USA.

That would be pitiful -- because Mexico is actually among the world's wealthiest nations. Mexico isn't a poor country like Haiti or Ethiopia, and with it's abundant natural resources it would have no excuse for many of it's people starving to death.

The Mexican diet of corn, beans, eggs, cheese, rice, some meat is not an unhealthy diet. The combination of corn and beans is a very healthy combination and affordable.

Could you provide a link? Death rates due to lack of adequate nutrition in many parts of the world, esp. sub-Saharan Africa, are staggering. I am puzzled as to how Mexico could be in second place. Thanks

Brings me to something I was discussing with one of my aunts. The question was "When I go to Mexico, a lot of people there are short and a lot are also overweight, but here, the children of the immigrants are by far bigger and taller than their cousins SOB."

We agreed that it was the diet that these kids are given here in the U.S. We have A LOT of hormones in our diet, our meat is different, our milk is different, and McDonalds is cheaper here .

Are you implying that is a GOOD or BAD thing, ProLogic?

The 3rd richest man IN THE WORLD, Carlos Slim Helu http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/WYDJ.html (net worth: $30 billion) lives behind security guards and gates in Mexico, and he is Mexican. I wonder why all the 'desperate' folks who come to the US illegally don't take this guy and his cronies down instead?
