Voters to decide whether illegal immigrants can get a license | Local & Regional News | Eugene News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KVAL CBS 13

''Voters will decide in November whether to implement a bill passed by Oregon lawmakers to give undocumented immigrants a pathway to an Oregon drivers license.''

''The law would have taken effect January 1 of this year.''

''But foes gathered enough signatures to put the measure on the November ballot.''

''Proponents said this isn't about citizenship - it's about safe driving.''

"Not to act as ID but to demonstrate that the person with the card knows Oregon laws and passed a drivers test - and they know how to drive," ''explained state Sen. Lee Beyer, D-Springfield.''

''The law would allow thousands of immigrants living in Oregon without legal permission to get a 4-year drivers licence. ''

''Beyer said the current law wasn't working and failed to ensure drivers carried insurance.* ''

What part of ILLEGAL don't people understand? What makes them think they're going to get insurance? Oregon is just as bad as California.

What makes the government think that being licensed will insure the driver carries insurance? I'm still driving around with damage to my truck after a illegal, uninsured driver lost a load of rocks from his over loaded truck in a highway. Never got a dime for repair of my truck because the trooper wrote the report as highway debris vs a lost load even though they finally stopped the driver a mile or two up the highway. Tried to file in small claims and the driver just simply disappeared. Sad thing is if my truck was a car, this rock would have gone right through the passenger side windshield and killed someone.

Look, people like yourself can keep shouting, "What part of ILLEGAL don't people understand?" until you are blue in the face. It won't make any difference. It won't make any difference, because the kind of border control you want to see is simply impossible. It is impossible, because sealing the border against unauthorized human crossings would also require sealing the border against U.S.-Mexico trade. And that would create an economic catastrophe.

In fact, it already has, once. Richard Nixon tried to seal the border back in 1969 as part of Operation Intercept, a program designed to stop marijuana smuggling. Operation Intercept was quite successful at stopping illegal border crossings. However, it also caused trade between U.S. and Mexico to grind to a standstill. The economic impact of that lost trade was so devastating, Nixon, who was no liberal, was forced to call a halt to Operation Intercept after just 20 days!

The bottom line: you can't have it both ways. You cannot expect to maintain a free northward flow of eggplants and avocados without also expecting a free northward flow of illegal immigrants and marijuana.

Illegal immigrants are a fact of life in every country in the world. They are here to stay. Best let them get drivers' licenses. That way, there won't be so many uninsured drivers around.

Better to block off Mexico than to kiss illegal alien butt like their kind getting any kind of US ID unless they're already in jail. Too: in MOST countries illegal aliens lay real low or else like Guatemalans IN Mexico.

Why would it interfere with trade when there would still be legal ports of entry? That's not sealing the border. We could do a lot more to secure our border. Would it cut illegal immigration to zero? No, but the goal should be to cut it back as much as we can. That coupled with e-verify and removing all incentives for them to come here and we could have new illegal entry down to a trickle.

No, they aren't here to stay. Something will be done in the not too far future and it won't be another amnesty. Do you actually think that illegal aliens will purchase insurance? If they did they would just let the policy expire from non-payment of premiums. No one without authorization in this country should get a driver's license, period!

we have found that granting enormous benefits to people wins many votes, but of course then we can always later put so many strings on the gift that very few can or will take it. like anybody that has passed the bar can have a green card, the line forms over here dont all rush at once now.

There won't be so many uninsured drivers? You have got to be kidding. On the news tonight was an illegal alien complaining it is too expensive ($20) to get an ID from Mexico in order to apply for a CA driver license. And recently, way over 50% of illegals flunked the Nevada driver license test, so now we need to pay for Spanish-speaking tutors!!

All the illegal aliens have to do is get proof of insurance, apply for their DL, then if lucky to pass, cancel the insurance. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. CA DMV does not follow up on expired or canceled automobile insurance because... guess... California doesn't have the money to pay for more DMV clerks. In fact, California State has considerably less employees than five years ago (admittedly, the State was bloated with taxpayer-paid employees). Police Departments and Fire Departments have been laying off for years, while the state's population keeps growing. Heck, even our prisons are way overcrowded and thousands are being housed in local county jails, already straining the county budgets.

It must be even worse in Southern California, if that's possible.

One word: NAFTA.

And you are comparing illegal aliens and marijuana (from the cartels) to eggplants and avocados??!!

I only buy California-grown fruits and vegetables in season. And we have plenty of California-grown avocados, garlic, asparagus, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, oranges, apples, etc. and etc. No need to purchase from south of the border. All I can think of is the water and fertilization used in Mexico for its crops. Eek!

And have you read about all the national parks and other open spaces in Northern California with hundreds of cartel-operated marijuana crops right here??

Here in Texas we used to get a lot of strawberries and grapes from California.
Now it's mostly from Chile. Once in a while we get the CA stuff and I buy it.

But I only buy in season and grown in the US.

Are you serious?

Because declaring legal ports of entry doesn't give you magic powers to automatically weed out people who cross illegally. You may as well ask, "Why not move deer crossing signs away from busy highways?"
