The only reason Mexico and Central America is poor is the currupt governments!

In a discussion about illegal immigration and the problems at the US Mexico Border this comment from a poster caught my eye. Basically what he/she is saying is the reason we are having at the US Border is a corrupt set of officials in those countries. The poster went on to say that Mexico and the other Central American Countries would be as wealthy as the USA if they had a better governments.

So he/she said we need to improve their governments and everything will be fine! No more immigration problems!

Does this sound logical to anyone else? Or are issues like culture, education, natural resources, infrastructure, religion, etc. really the reasons those countries are poor and billions of dollars and all the experts from America will not make much difference?

Our government is corrupt too. Extremely corrupt. We just dress corruption up in a better suit...that's all.

So i'm not so sure that corruption is at the root of all of their problems.

Just how do "we" improve their governments? Any donations we send to these corrupt countries aren't shared with the populace anyway. Funny how we keep interfering with the governments across the world but Latin America is hands off I guess.

I have come to the conclusion that Latin America's biggest problem is their Spanish roots. Look at the incredible transformation that Puerto Rico made during the first 50 or so years of US sovereignty ... they went from "the poor house of the Caribbean" in 1898 under Spanish rule to "the shining star of the Caribbean" in 1950 after 60 years of progress and advancement. Sure, Puerto Rico is still poorer than Mississippi ... but it is still richer and more prosperous than anywhere in Latin America with their anti-American socialist dictators - a fact not lost on the 95% of Puerto Ricans who believe in permanent union within the US federal system.

Agreed and that kicks "racism" away as the main reason LatAm is still messed up in 2014. Even Spain is now a mess again and it's mostly "white".

My point was that we have taken military action in countries where their citizens were in need of rescue but when it comes to countries south of our border we look the other way. The solution certainly isn't to import them all here.
