Like many Americans, I became seriously concerned about illegal immigration after watching some of those infamous "day without an alien" marches. After the initial shock of watching these throngs take over our streets, a question arose that has never really been answered: Why aren't these people and their organizers taking their demands for rights/social justice to their home countries? Why aren't they calling attention to the oppression and exploitation of, for example, the Mexican peasants by a tiny elite?

After all, wouldn't it be better if Mexico (and other countries) began providing greater social services to their citizens rather than telling them to ask these things of a foreign government?

I have to assume that the illegals who come here, if given a choice, would rather make a decent living in their home countries and remain there with their families than to deal with the unpleasantness that comes with illegal status. So, why not clamor for change in one's home country?

Besides, this party is going to end sooner or later: Either our government is finally going to put an end to the insanity of illegal immigration (which seems to be happening slowly but surely), or, in the long run, our economy will suffer the effects of illegal immigration so that living here won't be that much better than living south of our borders. Then, what? (A preview of this is already being seen in the fallout from the subprime mess.-A lot of illegal alien construction workers are out of a job.)

It seems the only real, long-term solution to improving living standards for people south of our border is for them to effectuate change in their home countries.

Otherwise, the only people benefiting from amnesty are US business interests hooked on cheap labor and Mexican or third world elites who don't want to share the wealth with the masses.

For one, Mexico is not a third world country. The ONLY people benefiting from illegal immigration are indeed the Businesses who use illegal labor. And of course the illegals benefit from getting these jobs and earning an income.

Actually, Mexico does benefit from sending their poor to our country because then they don't have to worry about taking care of them. The polititicans benefit because of politics. Businessed do benefit and of course pro-illegals benefit because it gives them one more thing to hate our country about.

The Mexican Government doesn't control its people like the way the American controls us. They leave on their own free will.

Unfortunately PL, it is a 3rd world country - but, it doesn't have to remain so.

The greed and corruption of the government though is keeping Mexicans down -

The Mexican government encourages its citizens to look to the U.S. for a better life rather than improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Do the illegals and the amnesty organzisers think there's something wrong with that? And, as I mentioned, in the long-run
this party is going to end sooner or later: Either our government is finally going to put an end to the insanity of illegal immigration (which seems to be happening slowly but surely), or, in the long run, our economy will suffer the effects of illegal immigration so that living here won't be that much better than living south of our borders. Then, what? (A preview of this is already being seen in the fallout from the subprime mess.-A lot of illegal alien construction workers are out of a job.)

Wouldn't it make more sense to work for change in Mexico and other similar countries by demanding some real changes there rather than demanding some imagined rights here?

Who benefits from illegal immigration? Well, let's see..

1)Employers who benefit from cheap labor and citizens who buy goods and services produced by illegal workers at a lower cost;

2)Churches who benefit from a stream of new (typically) religious folks, especially Catholic or Evangelicals;

3)The 'poverty pimps' who run soup kitchens, food pantries, low income clinics, etc.;

4)Businesses who have new customers; and

5)If your opinions run to the conspiratorial, the US Government and the New World Order whose goal is to get rid of the middle class by imposing ever increasing taxes to pay for social services needed by illegal workers

Then why did Vicente Fox have that how-to comic book published?

The Mexican government is extremely involved in immigration. No other government in the world is nearly as obsessed with emigration or is using it as it's major poverty-program.

If Americans didn't hire illegal workers, it wouldn't matter what the Mexican government did, they wouldn't come. It wouldn't make sense. First penalty for a company or individual who hires illegal workers: huge fine. Second penalty: lose your corporate charter and jail time. When will it happen? Never.
