Look i am against illegal immigration. Lets get that straight. But I dont see a fence built at huge cost, with dubious effectiveness at best to be worthwhile.
You give the example of 4 billion, when for 2% of that we could ship them out, I feel the similar way about the cost/benefit of a fence.
I don't object to the goal, I object to the cost vs effectiveness of the fence. Make sense?
PS-the idea is foolish and idiotic, not the people suggesting it here. At first glance it seems reasonable until you really think it through.
The double wall does work. It was proven in the San Diego sector where it was built.

People get so distracted with schemes... sure you have to do something about employers, handing out welfare, etc. etc. etc. BUT you put up a fence FIRST!!!! Stop the main break!!

We just need to guard it and patrol it, and enforce the crime of illegally crossing it.
The Chinese built a wall more than twice as long as our border with Mexico, and they did it more than two thousand years before we put a man on a moon.
There are some areas where they don't need it, like along some of the cliffs and canyons. I trust the border control agents know where to start first.
It's too late for a fence, it may have worked 20 years ago but now we would just be fencing people in. What we should have done is placed a tripod gun with a motion sensor at the border spread out by range. If we did that, we would not have this problem today.
Landmines with sufficient density to guarantee people couldn't cross would be a GOOD idea. But a fence is idiotic. People will go under, and over the fence. And the cost to build something actually sufficient in height and depth would be prohibitive.
As for comparing it to the great wall of China, thats foolish, the purpose of that wall was to stop siege equipment, horse, armies and their supplies, etc. It did little to stop people.
If our border was smaller we could manage it. But its just too large.
The old Iron Curtain with armed guards in Europe worked pretty damn well in keeping people in, tho the common people on BOTH sides hated it. The dif with Mexico is many Americans DO want that country blocked off.
Stop the gravy train and stop any illegal from working in our Country and we will not need a fence. Nobody should get a free ride unless they paid into the system and earned that right. That is especially true for people illegally entering our Country. There is no way we could afford to support the almost seven billion that inhabit the rest of our globe. Perhaps they could learn to support themselves if they knew there was no aid coming? It is one thing to offer help in the case of a natural disaster; it is another thing to assume all responsibility for other's needs. It is no wonder that people are flocking to our border!
We should force anybody, caught giving a job to any illegal, to pay the cost of deportation and fines. That should stop major invasions.
Any illegal that commits, even the smallest crime, should be instantly deported. They have already committed a major crime breaking into our Country.
