The New York Times of January 29, 1948 reported the wreck of a "charter plane carrying 28 Mexican farm workers from Oakland to the El Centro, CA, Deportation Center.... The crash occurred 20 miles west of Coalinga, 75 miles from Fresno."

Nancy Griffith covers this, twill bring tears to your heart, if you have a heart, Ya'll should give it a listen, if mans inhumanity to man bugs you.

(Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)

words by Woody Guthrie, music by Martin Hoffman

The crops are all in and the peaches are rotting

The oranges are packed in the creosote dumps

They're flying you back to the Mexico border

To pay all your money to wade back again

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

My father's own father, he waded that river

They took all the money he made in his life

My brothers and sisters come working the fruit trees

They rode the big trucks till they lay down and die

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

The skyplane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon

A fireball of lightning, and it shook all the hills

Who are these comrades that died like the dry leaves

The radio tells me they're just deportees

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

We died in your hills and we died in your deserts

We died in your valleys we died on your plains

We died 'neath your trees and we died in your bushes

Both sides of the river we died just the same

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

Some of us are illegal, and others not wanted

Our work contract's out and we have to move on

But it's six hundred miles to that Mexican border

They chase us like outlaws, like rustlers, like thieves.

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards

Is this the best way we can grow our good fruit

To fall like dry leaves and rot on the top soil

and be called by no name except "deportee"

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria

You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane

All they will call you will be deportees

It's 'plane wreck', not 'plain wreck'.

Not to mention that it has nothing to do with the present day.

Funny thing. In those olden days you could be deported once, but if you made it back you could not be deported again, providing you signed a contract with the grower. So the grower would rat out his crew to INS, the boys would be put on a plane, flown south, then they would sign a contract with the very same grower and come back.

Several locals who went out to the crash site near Coalinga commented on the disrespectful way the rescue crews handled the remains. Only Mexicans you know. I see that not much has changed.

Back in 1948 wealthy Jewish people who are usually White were also treated with disrespect by the Gentiles. That was the year that the neighborhood covenants banning Jews from certain neighborhoods were finally struck down by the Courts.

In other words: it was not just some Spanish speaking Indians who were dumped on during that era.

And I will not even go there re: Blacks and Jim Crow.

The legacy of the Spanish is the inability to govern. The legacy of the English is racism.

Interesting.

Please tell that to a brown skinned Latino who visits Spain------that country is very White Supremacist. That tidbit was relayed to me some years ago by several Mexicans who were over there.

England today has more 'people of color' than Spain-------virtually all of them were legal immigrants.
