Our military is currently in Iraq and Afghanistan.. haven't you heard? Otherwise it would be really expensive to have our military on the border.

You rely on the press to much my friend.
We have many troops stationed in S.Korea, Japan and Germany doing what? Oh yeah guarding their borders. We have many troops here at home that could also be deployed to our border. We have many troops in alaska. We have army reserves and National Guard.
We more than have enough resourses. They are simply under utilized.

The Guard are on the border now. All that has to change is the Rules of Engagement

All other issues aside, I believe this is due to the "Posse Comitatus" Act of 1878. In very broad terms, this act prohibits the Military from being used in domestic law-enforcement duties. (I BELIEVE the Coast Guard is exempt). I think it's partly our American reluctance to ever get into a situation like we see in so many parts of the world, where citizens see "tanks rolling through the streets". It's scary, it's upsetting, (I've seen it overseas), and it's not something most of us ever want to see here.

Whether patrolling the border is stricly a law-enforcement job is probably arguable. Whether some day we'll be FORCED to do things we don't want to do, again is debatable. But for now, I think most Americans would be extremely disturbed at the sight of heavily armed troops rolling through El Paso, or Nogales, or Calexico. Many of us are upset at illegal immigration, but we're not quite ready for THAT.

Just my own opinion...

Very true. I have several friends who just came back. They feel like they have made a difference. They also tell stories of being shot at but not allowed to return fire.
We need to use more troops and allow them to return fire. They also talked about being limited in capturing illegals and had to wait for a border agent to arrive on scene to do the arrest. In other words if the illegal refused to comply and be taken into custody voluntarily they got a walk. That is not acceptable. we need to have an agent with each unit.
