Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico, announced his withdrawal from the Democratic race on Thursday after disappointing results in the early-voting states.
A former congressman and US energy secretary, Mr Richardson, the only Hispanic candidate, was among the most experienced contenders. He won 5 per cent of the Democratic vote in the New Hampshire primary, finishing fourth.
