NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (Reuters) - At a Catholic-run shelter just across the border from Laredo, Texas, dozens of Latin American migrants say grace and tuck into a hearty meal of sausages, beans and rice, before trying to swim across the Rio Grande into the United States.

Weary migrants on their journey north often recharge their batteries at a network of similar shelters run by the Roman Catholic Church -- a lifeline sanctioned by the Vatican, despite increased U.S. efforts to keep out illegal immigrants.

Maybe it is time to strip the Catholic Church of its tax exempt status?

At least the ones participating in this kind of thing and encouraging Mexicans to break the laws of this country.

What's very hypocritical about the Catholic Church is that it seems to have an interest in keeping the corrupt Mexican system going, if it was sincere, it would be working for reform in Mexico and telling the Mexican elite to do something for their citizens.

This is going to sound like a slam against the Catholic Church:

I have noticed those countries that went from poverty and huge families to affluence and 1-2 children per couple were/are the same ones that the Catholic Church lost much of its prestige.

Ireland, Italy and Spain all come to mind.

30-50 years ago all three were 'Mexico' class-------today Ireland's per capita income is greater than the USA and even the 'poorest' country; Spain has well over double Mexico's income per person.

The Catholic church is motivated by the same thing as big business; money. Over 90% of Mexicans are Catholic. No more illegals = lots of money lost for the Catholic church. But, they will make you feel guilty and plead that it's about morals and that you're committing a sin against God by being anti-illegal immigration.

"There is no official religion, but almost 90 percent of Mexicans are Roman Catholic. Protestants account for around 5 percent."

I take it that these churches dont read Romans 13. I sure hope there arent any AG churches that tolerate this.

I wonder why they don't open the Vatican to illegals. Charity now is about having wages of Americans confiscated to support their charity programs.

Catholic nuns here were actually helping illegals find loopholes to get onto welfare programs.

The only way illegals can get welfare is from declaring no father as main support and the mother gets money through the children.

I didn't know illegals needed loopholes to get on welfare. They have free clinics and illegals fill them up, getting free medicine. They need no proof of anything there. They need no proof to get free food from food pantries, or clothes from clothes closets. They have taped them getting their medicine and going right around the corner, and selling it!

Out of all the illegals I know only one takes advantage of welfare and they are a family consisting of a single mother with 4 children. The dad is an American. A lot of illegals that I know are home owners, drive decent cars and don't get any help from anyone. When they need to go to the doctor they go to Mexico to stock up on medicine and for annual check ups.

And yes they sneak back across the border.

Just one more example of where the Catholic church seems to think they are above the law. Just when is someone going to have the backbone to stand up the man in the goofy hat and tell him to step off?
