Authorities think that Cesar Laurean, the Marine wanted in the death of the female Marine he allegedly raped, has fled to Mexico. One of the news commentators said he went "to his native Mexico."
Look at the FBI alert on him:
Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Alert - Cesar Armando Laurean (http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/alert/laurean_ca.htm - broken link)
It says he's a U.S. citizen in the text but on the top it says his place of birth and nationality are "Unknown." Is this a case of an illegal immigrant getting citizenship through military service? If it is, I think we need to rethink that policy. It would be too easy for undesirables to join the military for that purpose.
Furthermore, I think we need to KNOW the immigration status of those wanted for crimes but few news organizations report that. Meanwhile, guys like this head right back to the Border.
On the television news they havw been saying that he is a Mexican National, but that he received his citizenship a couple of years ago, which in reality would no make him a Mexican National. It would make him an American from Mexico.
I have always believed that entry into the U.S. military should require citizenship already in place.
So do I; it only makes sense. The military handles weapons, learns our tactics, and has access to sensitive information (and weapons). Military recruits should be citizens and carefully screened. Geez, here's a Marine whose place of birth and Nationality apparently aren't clear!
I have also seen reports saying that members of gangs and white separatist groups have joined the military to get weapons and tactical training. Are we this desperate for recruits that they don't screen people and they'll admit illegal immigrants?!
