Not too late - you watch the backlash against higher prices to cover the expense of all this PC correct catering.
And why would I "appreciate" a Bi-lingual society??
YOU appreciate it if it serves your needs - I have no need to speak - OR understand - an alternate language while I live in the USA.
When English is made the official language of commerce and government and transportation we will save a "beaucoup" amount of cash.
Feel free to call Quebec to inquire as to how much "beaucoup" is

This type of thinking is what is wrong with "bi-lingual" - you want to make Spanish a protected "alternate" language - with signage and voter forms and driving tests to serve that population - when will that end?

There's a series called "Firefly" that has an interesting take on this. The dialog is comprised of a mix of English and Chinese. The writer surmises that because the population of Earth is mostly Asian and English is the predominant language used for business, globalization will lead to the mix of the two languages.
I wonder how welcoming the pro-illegals would be of this concept? Bi-ligual is good, right? Or is it good only if it's Spanish?

Exactly my point - once the concept of "TRI-lingual" gets introduced watch how many will want to shut that door.

For the record; there are more Chinese (Mandarin) speakers than English ones---------but, most of the former are in China proper.
Too; till China somehow shares more of its wealth with the 90% poor majority..........I sense another 'Cultural Revolution'.
China's society is the 'bastard' child of unrestrained Capitalism and Communism.
NOTE: I never use that word to describe a human born to a couple out of wedlock.

A better question would be how many PEOPLE speak those languages, not how many COUNTRIES. Of note, let's not forget the matter of relevance.

I'm curious: why would one defend an American national chain hiring non-English speakers to deal with the general public?

Depends on where it is! In some places in Miami or the American Southwest, Spanish may actually be more prevalent than English.
