Employers could be sued for cost of educating illegal immigrants
Associated Press - January 23, 2008 6:25 PM ET
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Hiring illegal immigrants could put businesses on the hook for costs ranging from education to welfare, under a bill introduced in the Legislature.
The bill (LG1170) brought Wednesday by Senator Tom White of Omaha would provide for the recovery of costs for public education, health care and public assistance programs used by illegal immigrants and their families, spouses or other dependents.
The measure applies to those who "knowingly or recklessly recruited or employed illegal immigrants."
Action could be brought by the attorney general, a political subdivision or a citizen.
Other states--if they aren't--need to follow suit.
Interesting concept. Why stop at "knowingly or recklessly" and just simply require employers to pay a premium for cost recovery of these services for all workers without proper documentation. This puts the burden on the employer to weigh the costs legal vs. illegal workers. Only problem is how to enforce it.

If a citizen sponsors an immigrant they must sign an I 864 affidavit of support. This basically puts the sponsor financially responsible for any public or private charges incurred by their beneficiary. So if the beneficiairy ends up on welfare the government can go back to the sponsor and charge them for the expense. If the beneficiary gets hit by a car and runs up a hospital bill the sponsor can be tracked down and billed.
If a freakin business or corporation "sponsors" an illegal they should also be held responsible for any charges that illegal incurs public or private just like citizens who sponsor immigrants legally.
Sounds good too me, you have to hit the people with the money where it hurts.
I have to wonder if this issue isn't one that transcends party lines. There have been alot of states that are coming up with creative ways to address immigrations issues. More power to them.
The employers should be held accountable. After all, they profit from their cheap illegal labor -- while the American taxpayers foot the bill for all of the ‘freebies.’ Why should the American taxpayer continue to carry the burden, while the greedy employers laugh all the way to the bank? If they want their slave labor; let them pay for it ALL.
