I will have him check into it, he has been looking for something and regular sports bore him!!!!!

Excellent!

If anyone else is looking for an Irish sporting activity in their area...I'm more than happy to look up a local GAA!

One thing that may shock a lot of people is that most Spanish, Portuguese, English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh share one male ancestor--------they all have the same basic 'Y'' chromosome.

Which; BTW, includes most Americans-------------both Anglo as well as Hispanic.

They were white!

Especially back in the Mid 1800's that was a major thing going for them.
Do a little research on the building of the Erie canal system. The builders were told they could not rent local black slaves as they were too valuable it was suggested that they "go get some Irish they'er not worth a dime"

I remember being amazed some years ago when scientists in England found a human skeleton in a burial mound of some sort, 9,000 years old..and then, using DNA technology, found out that the elderly gentleman who lived just down the hill, in the house he was born in, was a direct descendant (blood relative) of the "primitive" fellow. Amazed, that is, until I got to thinking about all that can happen in 9,000 years, and how many ancestors every one of us has.
Looking at it THAT way, it would have been unimaginably 'weird" if the old farmer had NOT been related to the 'cave-man', rather than the 'reverse'....

That is very true.

In fact; 'back in the day', Free Persons of Color (non slave Blacks) used to move out of an area when the Irish moved in-------the latters' reputation was that bad.

My grandfather grew up on the south side of Chicago in the 1900's. He was beaten up nearly every day and joined the Army at age 16 to get away from his neighborhood. He was one of 12 siblings and known as "Shanty Irish". He was very tempted to change his last name to "Smith" from our very obvious Irish surname. He did not and proceeded to become an executive VP for ARCO without a high school diploma. Anyone who says Irish discrimination was a myth is a fool.

The key word being 'was'.

And; I thought I would never say this; but, I am becoming nostalgic for names like McDermott, O'reilly, Murphy, etc.

The birthrate of 'Irish' Americans is probably below replacement level now (2.1 children per woman).

It really wasn't until the Civil War that Irish were accepted and then assimilated. Maybe if a bunch of illegals are forced to go to war and die for the US, then they would be accepted too and could assimilate faster.

Assimilation has a lot to do with being respected and accepted.
Not true on the Irish. Assimilation has to do with two things: Whether the immigrants really want to assimilate, and whether the natives are accepting or have problems with these immigrants.

I have to disagree. I think (like Mach 50 said) the Civil War DID accelerate the assimilation of the Irish. Also their centuries-long subjugation at home by the British, under which about HALF the early-day Irish learned English--(a big help here). I believe the early day Irish WANTED to assimilate because they had no choice. No one here offered them the option to "stay Irish". They were PRESSURED into assimilating---so they did. I think the "natives" DID have problems with the Irish, who were very much disliked and feared upon their arrival.

But society was different then. The 'dislike' and 'harshness' the Irish ran into, ensured their assimilation. They assimilated in order to gain society's 'approval'. They saw no other option.

Today, we DON'T push assimilation--it's a 'choice". Assimilating is "OK" ,but so is NOT assmilating. Since assimilation is difficult, and 'citizenshp' is no longer seen as 'important', it's easy to see that some modern immigrants just look at it as 'no big thing', and choose NOT to assimilate.
