WASHINGTON-Illegal immigration remains a big political issue across the country. And it figured big in elections in Virginia this year. But will there be any action on the issue now that the General Assembly is in session?
There are more than 100 different bills already introduced in Richmond related to immigrants. But not all the bills have to do with illegal immigration.
Democratic Senate Majority leader Dick Saslaw, of Fairfax, predicts most of the bills won't see the light of day. "Last year they put in 31, do you know how many passed, how about zero," he says, describing most of the bills as political "grandstanding".
Some Virginia lawmakers say some of the bills are mean spirited and not just directed against illegal immigrants. For example, there is a bill that would allow an employer to fire any worker who speaks anything but English while on the job. Another proposed legislation would require a defendant appearing in court to pay for language interpreters if they are convicted of a crime. Then there is bill that would require a person to provide proof of citizenship before any resident could get a driver's license. "We are not punishing employers," Saslaw says. "We are not going to pass a bill that allows you to fire somebody who does not speak English after you hired them."
Va. Lawmakers Not Likely to Vote on Illegal Immigration Bills

That would be a shame. I don't see anything wrong with any of the ones mentioned in the article.

They should. They dang sure need them, since the feds are enforcing the immigration laws we already have. Each state is going to have to protect themselves, not wait for the feds to do it.

These are really the important ones. If they can get these 2 passed, none of the other ones will matter:

Other bills that the Virginia Assembly could vote on include suspending the business license of companies that hire illegal immigrants, and requiring sheriffs to check the immigration status of everyone in local jails.
Maybe Virginia could avoid tragedies like this one:Illegal Alien murderer had been in arrested and released several times prior to murdering 3 college students.

I think that statement can go both ways, it can be used towards anti-illegals as well. "Life is mean spirited. Grow up. Get over it."

I will never 'get over' our government flagrantly flouting its own laws------especially considering that we have the so-called Patriot Act. Yet; Washington does not have the guts to 'walk the talk' considering its much tighter passport controls, etc.
