And to add some more 'gasoline' to the fire: Guatemala, etfc. were also part of Mexico after 1821 yet one does not hear 'boo' from the MEChA crownd about wanting the above back------------probably because Guatemala is still poor (almost 200 years later) whereas us Gringos built up our Southwest into a First World powerhouse.

I find it "funny" the poster in NYC (probably not all just the 3) seem to think of themselves as so forward. And the rest of us as ignorant and racist.

I agree that NYC is a melting pot as it should be Ellis Island ringing any bells? My family came through there as many other did I am sure. But, I can assure you it NEVER crossed my relatives mind (German) to come here and fly the German flag above the American flag.
They were PROUD to be Americans and had a better life for it. They NEVER spoke German-only AMERICAN. Why you ask? Because they were happy and PROUD to be AMERICANS.
Where does it say, come on over and we will learn your language? I mean when I go to another country I at least try to speak to them in THEIR language. It might not be very good, but at least I try. But, I am not living there either.
Why is it that everything now a days is 1 for ENGLISH and 2 for Spanish? Why is that even an option? There is no 3 for German, 4 for Italian, ect....

You have many spanish speaking people in the US. You have WHOLE neighborhoods where spanish is the only language spoken. I can understand the illegal immigrant beef but now language? come on now.

Many "legal" immigrants come to this country not knowing a word of english. To help make assimilation easier they incorporate spanish. This makes them feel more comfortable and allows them to enjoy the states to the fullest. If German had been the second most spoken language here, it would be on most options.

Till ca. 1900; there was 'serious' talk about making German an official language of the USA but evidently WW I put a stop to those plans

Fast forward 100 years and it is looking that Spanish will be 'demoted' in the eyes of public opinion as well.

Translation: learn English or be sidelined----------permanently here in the USA.

Well, I still think that many of you are being incredibly near-sighted and closed-minded. Disagreeing with illegal immigration is one thing; but discouraging the continuation of a culture is in another class entirely.

We have a culture------where the rule of law applies, etc.

Unlike a Third World country.

Face it: if said Third World countries have such great cultures; why are there quite a few of their citizens here (including their spouses and children) breaking our laws by their physical presence?

If the illegal Latinos, etc. do not like the way we do things here.......they can self deport.

Unlike say the Jews after WW II would suffered ghastly losses courtesy of the Nazi's causing 'Third World' conditions for most of the Holocaust survivors-------but had the 'human capital' to bounce back (with a relatively small infusion of money and moral support)----------most, if not all Third World countries are dysfunctional to start with.

Take Mexico: that country has tremendous natural resources yet is a screwed up mess.

Yet; even the WW II 'Gentile' Germans and Japanese rebuilt their shattered, burned out truncated countries back into powerhouses within one generation.

If the Germans, Japanese and Jews can do so: what is Mexico's, etc. problem?
