I am currently in school and we are writing papers on how to solve illegal immigration and I choose to use taxing all money wired to other countries from the U.S from illgal immigrates since they send 52 BILLION dollar to there homes. So my question is why and how would taxing this money help americans. If anyone can help me that would be great. I found lots of helpful websites but not too many on how or why just that it is a good idea.

I think a good starting point for deciding how to deal with illegal immigration to the US would be to study how Mexico deals with illegals.

Wires (via Western Union, for example) already have a tax assessed. An interesting counterpoint to your paper would be an analysis of how many billions of dollars the US government gets to keep from illegals working in the USA who are not filing income tax returns. (Note: Hypothetically, and something to consider, if those same people were legal and eligible for tax returns, the majority would receive refunds. The US government gets to keep this money. Understand?) I'm betting the federal taxes withheld from their pay packets is much more than the wired money leaving the US. Besides, US companies are making a LOT of money on their labor and their consumer spending.

Totally agreed with tamzdance, it is a missconception that illegals don't pay taxes, any body using a SSN in the payroll pays taxes to the federal goverment and/or state tax and/or SS, the vast majority would qualify for a tax refund if they were to file legally, but what happens to all that money?? Uncle Sam doesn't want you to know!!

Think it through. How do you tell the money if from illegals? As soon as you demand ID only legals send money. Some legals go into business fronting for the illegals. There are all sorts of ways to get money across borders other than wiring it.

If you tax all transfers you interfere with commerce a whole lot. Likely you would get retaliaton and US transfers in would be taxed by the Europeans. If you tax only the convenience places that flow dries up. They simply go to using commercial users who batch it up and send it through commercial channels.

So by and large it is impractical.
